1. Reading
American Indians or Native Americans were the
indigenous peoples that arrived in North America around
12,000 years ago. There were hundreds of tribes with
different cultures, languages, clothing, and customs. Some
Indian tribes were the Apaches, the Cherokees, the
Cheyennes, the Comanches, the Mohicans, the Navajos, the
Sioux and many others.
In the past, some American Indian tribes were hunters
and others lived on agriculture. The government of the
tribe consisted of a council of chiefs.
When the European immigrants arrived into North
America, they started to conquest the lands of the Native
Americans. There were several wars and the American
Indians’ conditions become worse and worse.
Nowadays, some Indians live in cities or towns, while
others live in reservations. Reservations are special villages
and lands where Native Americans try to keep their culture.
There are about two million Native Americans in the United
States today.
