2. INTRODUCTION
Higher education system has grown in a remarkable way, particularly
in post-independent period
Fisheries education has late start
Fisheries contribute 0.83% to agricultural GDP (4.75%) (Rs. 78,053
crores).
Challenge: To produce adequate and cheap fish for all
Lack of adequate and professionally skilled human resources
To maximize benefits and minimize risks
Fisheries education should be subjected to innovations and reforms
Prepare graduates and equip them
3. ELIGIBILITY
Fisheries education and research is conducted by ICAR
and SAU’s
Admission in B. F. Sc.: after 10+2 having PCB group
Based on merit/competitive examinations
Special quota for outside state candidates through ICAR
examination.
Degree course involves Practical experience; hands on
Training & in plant Trainingt.
4. GROWTH OF FISHERIES EDUCATION IN INDIA
Fisheries education has grown and evolved as a professional
discipline
First Fisheries college started at Mangalore (1969)
21 Fisheries colleges (14 offer Masters and 6 Doctoral
programmes)
Revising and reorienting the curricula by ICAR (2009 onwards)
Most recent exercise is under process in 2016
