2. Where is it?
This very famous valley located in Luxor, Egypt. Exactly, on the west bank of the
Nilo river, opposite Thebes.
3. What can you find?
For a period of nearly 500 years from the 16th to 11th century BC, rock cut tombs
were excavated for the Pharaohs and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom. It was
the principal burial place of the major royal figures of the Egyptian New Kingdom.
The royal tombs were decorated with scenes from Egyptian mythology and give
clues of the beliefs and funerary rituals of the period(mummification). Almost all of
the 63 tombs and chambers of kings and queens that are on the valley of the
kings, seem to have been opened and robbed in antiquity, but they still give an
idea of the opulence and power of the Pharaohs.
4. Why is famous?
Is famous because in modern times the valley
has the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun,
and is one of the famous archaeological sites in
the world.
Exploration, excavation and conservation
continues in the valley, and many tourist go
there.
5. TUTANKHAMUN
The valley has become famous and one of the most famous archaeological and egyptiological place
thanks to the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun. Tutankhamun or King Tut was a Pharaoh of Egypt
3.300 years ago. He started his reign with nine years old and he died ten years later. In 1922, Howard
Carter, a British archeologist, found the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings. There was a gold
mask over his face and many other precious objects like jewellery on the tomb.
