4. BIG BEN
Everyone thinks Big Ben is the name of a famous London clock, but
actually, it’s the name of the big bell inside the clock tower. You can
hear the bell every hour. The clock is on a tall tower on the Houses of
Parliament. It is over 150 years old, but it still works very well. There
are thousans of old British coins on the clock’s pendulum. The coins
are very heavy and they hold the pendulum in the correct position.
During meetengs of Parliament, a light shines above the clock so the
people of London always know about the meetings. They can go into
the visitors’ gallery and listen too. At night lights illuminate the tower
and it looks fantastic.

5. STONEHEDGE
At Stonehedge, on Salisbury Plain in South-West England, there is a misterious ring
of stones. The ring is about 4,000 years old. There is one entrance to the ring, and
there are more stones in the centre. These enormous stones aren’t from the area.
People carried them for nearly 400 kilometres from the mountains of Wales! How did
they do this very difficult task? Nobody knows!
The position of the stones is very interesting. They correspond to the position of the
sun and the moon at different times of the year. In ancient times, people believed that
the sun and moon had magic powers. So they probably used the stones for magis
ceremoies or to make wishes.
