Equipped with a location-aware mobile phone participants walk the streets of Beijing using a full screen map that shows the different interactive locations that could be part of their journey. Participants see themselves move over this map in real time and Lao Cheng accompanies them immersing them in an engaging historic and partly fictional narrative. At each of the interactive locations participants will learn about the local personal history of that specific place as information is retrieved onto the mobile device. Illustrated by photos, audio and video, gathered by projectpartners from literature, local archives and interviews with inhabitants, and built upon by user-generated content from the participants themselves, the stories presented fit within Lao Cheng’s narrative, and merge with the current surroundings. Next the participants are asked to respond to the information they have just received as this might have triggered memories and stories of their own. They can subsequently leave notes or media (a photograph, a short clip,an audio recording) at that specific location using their mobile phone. When others come next to this location they can now also learn about the (mediated) comments of the previous participants, creating a growing annotated historic and personal description of the place. All interaction and dynamic and dynamic is presented live on the Not Only Now website for the larger audience. The traces of the participants are projected live onto a map also for non-participants to see. Comments will appear as they are uploaded on the streets, creating in time a vast virtual (and personal) layer over Lao Cheng’s historic virtual layer. Additionally all the participants’ wanderings (including the uploaded comments and media) are stored for playback later so the participants themselves can relive their journey and see those of others. In addition, two large urban screens placed at strategically busy intersections will show the live progress of the participants and invite the audience to participate.
