2. The Woman in Black
Cinematography: This is an establishing/ long shot
taken from the trailer. This shot is used in order to
establish a setting as well as to show what is in the
shot and surrounding it i.e. the overgrown plants and
the broken gate. This connotes that this house has
been abandoned for a while and therefore conveys the
horror theme
3. Sound: From this shot, you can tell that a noise has
been made (a loud bang) and therefore he has turned
around to see what has made the sound. Loud bangs
are a common convention used in horror films as they
make the audience jump and create a sense of enigma
in the scene.
4. Mise-en-Scene: The mise-en-scene used in this
shot shows an old and dark house which is
portrayed through the use of old paintings and
chandeliers. The house is covered in cobwebs and
dust which shows that it has been empty for a long
time. An abandoned house is a common setting
used in many horror films.
5. Editing: A montage has been created using a
series of different scenes which are fast
paced to tell the story. The fast pace helps
build tension and fear in the audience.
6. The Conjuring
Cinematography: A medium close-up shot is
used to show the emotions on a persons face as
well as their body language. Looking at this shot,
the woman looks scared and tense which builds
tension for the viewer.
7. Sound: In this shot, there is a game being played with
a slightly up beat song being played in the
background. This creates a sense of normality in the
beginning which is a common convention used in
horror trailers before the scarier things begin to
happen.
8. Mise-en-Scene: The old and dusty objects found in the
basement in this shot show that this house is quite old
and that no one has lived there for a long time. This
tells the audience that this house could be haunted as
there hasn’t been any inhabitants for a long time. This
is common in horror films.
9. Editing: As the woman walks toward a weird
sound she heard, a series of blackouts happen
as she gets closer to the room. This builds fear
within the audience.
10. The Possession
Cinematography: A close-up shot of an old box
can tell the audience that this is a key object
within the film as the box is the main focus of the
shot. This helps build tension as the audience
wants to find out what is inside the box.
11. Sound: As the fork is stabbed onto the plate, a
countdown noise is heard at the same time as the
fork which begins to get faster. This builds up
tension and fear that something is going to happen
to make you jump soon.
12. Mise-en-Scene: The focus in the shot again is
the box, which appears to be opening by itself.
This tells the audience that this box contains
something important within the film and builds
enigma and fear at the same time.
13. Editing: As the focus is on the door, the next shot is
following the door being zoomed in on and then
opened at a slow pace. This builds tension as the
slow pace helps build anxiety in the audience.
