WWII - Canada Goes To War - Presentation Transcript
The Great Depression affected more than just Canada. It was taking place across the world.
Unemployment was high and people were unhappy.
Germany, who had been on the losing side of World War I, had a leader named Adolf Hitler .
Hitler, who had fought in the trenches during World War I, wanted Germany to dominate the world.
In 1939, with Germany’s aggression building across Europe, countries feared what might happen if Germany kept going...
Britain and France signed a treaty , where they promised to protect Poland if Germany invaded.
On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded its neighbour, Poland.
Honouring their treaty , Britain & France declared war on Germany.
Unlike during World War I, Canada was not automatically in the war because Britain declared war (even though we were still members of the Commonwealth ).
Canada wasn’t in the war yet because we had become more independent from Britain since WWI.
It was like Canada had become a young adult – we didn’t always have to do what our parents did.
Canada saw the danger that Hitler and the Germans posed
On September 10, 1939, Canada’s Prime Minister Mackenzie King declared war on Germany
