2. Ancient Greek Theatre
Before theatre was purely entertainment, it was part of a ritual
to the Greek gods.
”City Dionysia” was the name of a festival that the Greeks
participated in to honor the god Dionysus.
Plays were only presented at this festival
Men performed songs
Originally these festivals took place in Athens, but later spread
to it’s allies in order to promote friendly relations.
3. Original Elements of a Play
Actors, directors, and dramatist were all the same person
Only three actors (all male) were
allowed to perform in each play
Later some non-speaking parts were
added to that number
Chorus became a very important role. The Chorus was a group of actors
who delivered the same lines at the same time
Usually music accompanied the lines of the Chorus
4. Three Original Genres
Comedy: Based on imitation, usually of someone in power or the government in
general. Aristophanes was the author of most original comedies.
Tragedy: Evolved from songs sung to the
god Dionysus. Plays that include tragic
events and the downfall of the main
character.
Satyr: Based on Greek mythology that usually included mockery,
drunkenness, sexuality and general happiness. Satyrs were performed after
tragedies in order to lighten the mood.
5. The Theatre
Orchestra: A large space in
the center of the theatre
where the play, dancing and
ritual activities took place
Skene: Large building behind the orchestra
which served as backstage, changing rooms
and a backdrop for scenery.
6. Acting: All actors were male and they were all amateurs (not
professionals). They had to make big gestures with their body so
the audience could clearly see what was happening.
Costumes and Masks: Due to the lack of technology, the
masks had to exaggerate facial expressions so that the
audience could understand better. The Masks were also
designed to amplify the actors’ voices.
