2. QUESTIONS ABOUT MY
TARGET AUDIENCE
1. What is the age range of potential viewers? – The age range for my media
product will be age 15+. I have chosen this age range because some of the
content in this short film, young viewers will not understand and older viewers
might be able to relate to in any way whether someone they know or maybe
they have experienced domestic abuse first hand.
3. QUESTIONS ABOUT MY TARGET
AUDIENCE
2. ABC1? – My film would attract the social classes of middle class and lower class.
4. QUESTIONS ABOUT MY
TARGET AUDIENCE
3. What gender will the audience be? –
The audience will be a mix between
males and females. I think this because
the males can see how domestic abuse
affects a female when being
domestically abused. Females because
they might be able to relate to the
issues being raised in the short film.
5. QUESTIONS ABOUT MY TARGET
AUDIENCE
4. What will the occupations be of potential consumers? – The potential
consumers could be prisons as some of the inmates could be in there for
domestic abuse crimes, could possible be youth groups to show them dangers
of relationships. Also possibly TV to show viewers the potential risks and dangers
of relationships.
6. QUESTIONS ABOUT MY TARGET
AUDIENCE
5. What factors are potential customers likely to consider before purchasing/consuming the short
film? – Potential customers would possible think about before buying my product is that is it
going to be worth the money? Is it going to educate my students? Is it going to be a good short
film?
7. QUESTIONS ABOUT MY TARGET
AUDIENCE
6. How will customers find out about the short film you are distributing? – Customers will find out
about my film by looking online, magazines, adverts etc.
8. QUESTIONS ABOUT MY TARGET
AUDIENCE
7. Will the cost of the product influence a customer’s decision to buy from you? (if you are selling
it- you might argue it is free) – I would argue that my media product is for free because I want it
to educate audiences in the dangers and the effects domestic abuse has on those experiencing
it.
9. QUESTIONS ABOUT
MY TARGET
AUDIENCE
8. List all the ways contact could be made with potential customers in order to gain qualitative and
quantitative research – I would use quantitative research because I could use social media such
as Facebook to engage my audience to get an understand of the topic of domestic abuse.
10. QUESTIONS ABOUT MY TARGET
AUDIENCE
9. Probable objections to your short film – The probable objections to my short film could be that
the audiences might think it is sexist because my film is about a female domestically abused.
11. QUESTIONS ABOUT
MY TARGET
AUDIENCE
10. risk of alienating your secondary audience – My secondary
audience might find some of the scenes in the film disturbing as it will
have scenes where the female is being beaten and it could upset
some older audiences who might have experienced it. Younger
audiences could find it disturbing maybe for the same reasons.
12. ROLES
Working title – ALONE
Director – Kieran Falzon
Camera - Oliver Barry
Sound – Yasmin Ally
Editor – Loren Turner
Others – Calum Secular
13. WORKING HYPOTHESIS
AND INTERPRETATION
In life I believe that domestic abuse should not be
tolerated and should be known worldwide. 1 in 4
women are affected by domestic abuse in their
lifetime. Everyone should be aware of domestic
abuse.
14. WORKING HYPOTHESIS
AND INTERPRETATION
My film will show this in action as in my
short film it will show the effect it has on
women who are being domestically
abused.
15. WORKING HYPOTHESIS AND
INTERPRETATION
The main conflict in my short film is between the
female and male character. The female character
is being domestically abused by the male
character and shows her side of things and how
she is feeling emotionally and physically.
17. TOPIC
My film’s subject is looking at young
female women who are being
domestically abused. I will show this
in the genre of social realism.
18. TOPIC
The necessary background
information they will need is that
they will need to know exactly
what domestic abuse is but the short
film will explain how it happens and
how to resolve the problem.
19. ACTION SEQUENCES
First scene
In the first scene of my short film I am going to have a shot of a girl drinking a cup of tea
with bruises on her face and arms with a bottle of pills on the table in front of her and
also a picture of the man she is with.
20. ACTION SEQUENCES
First scene
This sequence will contribute to the whole film because it will set what is going on in the
characters life and shows what is happening to her within the first shot of the film. The
facts the audience can gather from this scene is that she is being beaten which will give
the area of representation, which is domestic abuse.
21. ACTION SEQUENCES
First scene
The key representative imagery I want to capture is an upset girl who has been beaten,
and to give the audience little hints to what is happening in the first scene.
22. MAIN CHARACTERS
Sarah – Is the female character who is an abusive
relationship. This character is the main person in the short
film. This character is interesting because the audience
will get an insight into a reason why females get
domestically abused in relationships.
23. MAIN CHARACTERS
Jane – She is friends with Sarah and is trying to get help
and support Sarah while in this abusive relationship. (She
is the only one who knows about the domestic violence).
24. MAIN CHARACTERS
Gary – Is the abusive partner in the relationship. He is a
significant character in the short film because the
audience will see why men abuse their partners and I
could explore many reasons with this character.
25. CONFLICT
The issue in this film is going to be about domestic abuse and how it
can effect the person being abused.
26. AUDIENCE BIASES
Women may have a biased view against men
being violent and men may have a view that
women may be violent themselves. The audience
needs to understand that domestic violence can
happen to anyone of any age, gender or sexuality,
but the biggest cause of domestic violence is
occurred when women are being abused by a
male.
27. AUDIENCE BIASES
To get the audience to see the different truths in
the short film I will introduce some key facts in the
beginning and ending of the film, and to tell the
audience that it can happen to anyone.
28. STRUCTURE
The structure of my short film is going to be in a linear form so no
flashbacks or any long time jumps will be involved.
29. STRUCTURE
Important information will appear as soon as the camera starts rolling
because I feel as a director that everything that will appear on screen
will be important to the viewers.
30. STRUCTURE
I think the climatic sequence should go in the middle of the short film
and carry it on until the end of the short film to engage the audiences.
The reason why I didn’t put it at the beginning is because I want the
audience to understand or relate to characters in the beginning
sequence.
31. FORM AND STYLE
As my short film is in the social realism genre I can interpret the codes and
conventions used in the genre such as long takes with the camera work,
untrained actors, noticeable locations so the audience can relate to it in their
everyday life.
Also I am going to include low key lighting and put the white balance setting
on to try and get a darker tone to the film as it is a gritty subject and matter of
everyday people.
32. RESOLUTION
I would like my film ending to be where the male
character gets taken away with the police because Jane
told them everything. The final shot is where Sarah is
sitting at a table girl drinking a cup of tea with bruises on
her face and arms with a bottle of pills on the table in
front of her and also a picture of the man she was with. I
have chosen this as my ending because it completes the
circle of the film.
33. RESOLUTION
I would like my audience to take away from this short
film is that I want to show the audience although domestic
abuse is horrible if you do the right thing and tell
someone you can get out of that abusive relationship.
34. BUDGET
I am going to distribute my film straight
to DVD by making my own personal DVD
and sell it on to colleges, schools, youth
groups who has experienced domestic
abuse and prisons, I will charge them
about £20 a DVD. I have chosen this way
because it will be a way to raise
awareness nationally in the UK.
35. BUDGET
I will need £900 for the cameras.
I have 3 main characters and will give
each actor £500 for 5 days work so I
would need about £3,000 for all 3 actors,
that is for 10 days of work.
For the cameramen I would need 3 of
them to operate all cameras and would
pay them £100 a day for 10 days of work
which means I will need £3,000.
Overall I would need a total of £6,900.
36. LOGISTICS
There will be possible barriers when trying to make
this film for example trying to get the crew
altogether at the same time and at the same place.
Also physically getting the equipment all on the set
at the same time for example the camera’s, sound
systems etc. Also food for the crew so catering
could be a problem.
37. Overall this short film is about Sarah being
domestically abused by her partner Gary and
is getting help by her friend Jane.
I will need a budget of £6,900.
I want to educate many people nationally
with this short film.
