“Texas took a step toward instituting ethnic studies courses in
public schools across the state on April 10th 2014, with the State
Board of Education voting 11 to 3 to create instructional
materials for such classes (huffingtonpost 2014).” Activists had
pushed since November to create a statewide Mexican-American
studies curriculum, arguing that such courses would help boost
student achievement and foster cultural awareness in the state’s
majority-Hispanic school system.

Teacher of the Year for Riverside High School in
Ysleta and for the Ysleta Federation of Teachers.
She is also the recipient of the Salute to Women
in Education Award by the El Paso Women’s
Employment and Education, Inc.; the Education
Award by Adelante Mujer Hispana and twice
earned the summer employment award from the
U.S. Department of Agriculture; Summer
Employment Award (2 summers).
