1. World War I and the Russian Revolution Nate, Josh, Joseph
2. Causes of the Revolution Long period of opression by czars and unrest of the people. Western humanitarian ideas came to the Russian people. Industrialized work places and the exploited working class provided a perfect place for radical ideas to ferment.
3. Attempts at Reform Alexander II made many reforms to help calm the poor citizens of Russia. He freed the serfs and gave them the right to own land. He also set up a new judicial system and local self government. However, all of these reforms were reversed by his successor, Alexander III.
4. Alexander III Alexander III ended the reforms of his father, causing revolutionary ideas to rise up higher than before. He responded to this by going after and ending groups of people that plotted against the government. The pogroms started under Alexander III as well.
5. World War I Russia was an Imperialist nation that was part of the Triple Entente. Russia lost many of its battles horribly. An example of this is the Battle of Tannenberg. The Russian military was not prepared to fight a war. All of the Russian battles had high numbers of casualties.
6. Nicholas II In 1915, czar Nicholas II took control of the Russian military personally, which was disastrous for the Russians. Food and other goods began to grow scarce in Russia due to the lack of preparation caused by poor leadership. Nicholas II left his wife control country, which caused popularity for the monarchy to drop.
7. How This Affected the Revolution The unrest in Russia peaked when the Russian military failed miserably. The conditions grew worse in Russia as the war went on because goods were being shipped of to soldiers, and the people did not received much food. Lack of support for the monarchy heightened as the Russians lost more and more battles.
8. Effects of the Revolution End of autocracy. Establishment of socialist/communist government. Russia became a major power. Russia withdrew from the World War. Spread of communism. Increased global tensions.
