NUMBER 3-MARCH 2011

2. A new school year; new challenges, and another number of our Newsletter. It is
nearly a miracle that this third number has been published. Had a few teachers and a
group of students not worked so hard, we would have given up. Last year we were sure
we would be able to publish three numbers during 2010-11. However, schools are
complex microcosms and what sometimes looks like perfectly possible can become
suddenly really difficult to achieve, especially when teachers take part in so many different
activities at the same time.
The very nature of the Newsletter is increasing the level of difficulty: if it‟s going to
be used as an instrument to trigger cooperative, cross-curricular work, rather than as a
means of showing students‟ best achievements, there‟s no point in publishing things which
do not meet these requirements.
The projects shown in the Newsletter prove how hard people work. Let‟s take the
„Create a Logo‟ activity as an example: one of the silliest ideas people have, concerning
education, is that Art teachers can do anything at any time. As you can check here,
designing a logo properly requires a lot of time and knowledge. Of course everybody can
produce a poster; a logo or a sign, but that shouldn‟t be called a project at all...Our
students have a great word for that: „un trabajín‟...
In September we were lucky enough to get a new colleague into the Programme,
Marcos Álvarez, who is currently teaching History in 4º ESO. Also, a new Technology
teacher, Gerardo Domeneq, is working hard to join the Stream next year. This will partially
help to solve the problem which will appear when other teachers move to another school in
September, but that‟s another story…
This school year we have got 40 students in the Bilingual Programme in 1º ESO:
this is the first time in the 7 years of implementation of the bilingual sections project that
we have more pupils in the bilingual stream than in the ordinary stream: good news for the
programme, but a really serious challenge for the future as well. Someone somewhere
should face the fact that the survival of these studies requires inmediate action!
As usual, the best of all, are our students: we have incorporated a new section
„Former students, Current friends‟ to show how life has changed for those who left school
after going through the six years bilingual experience: nobody can imagine how proud we
feel of them!
We have had great times during this semester: two of our students in 1º BACH,
Sergio Álvarez and Estela Menéndez, were chosen to take part in the European
Parliament Model in Oviedo. Our new English colleague, María Cao, managed to convince
them to do some research in just a few days: well done, indeed!
Also, 32 pupils from 3º ESO have just arrived from a trip to London where they had
the chance to visit the bilingual school Cañada Blanch, and share some time with the
students there.
The second term is being really long, and everybody is a bit anxious feeling that the
third one will be too short and we will run out of time to finish all the activities which have
been designed. Let‟s hope everything goes right and we manage to publish a new number
by June...

USING TEXTURES TO DESCRIBE AN IMAGE. IMAGINING A STORY
The name of this film is „Plan B: the bank robbery‟. The main character‟s name
is Aitor. He‟s very tall and Slim. His friend is Tobby: he‟s really intelligent and
he‟s going to help Aitor to rob the bank. It‟s twelve o‟clock in Manhattan when
the alarm of the bank sounds: the bank clerk is calling the police. When the
police arrive, the clerk is lying on the ground with a knife in his stomach. The
police watches someone strange in front of the bank: two people are carrying a
big bag. The police goes to the car and starts chasing Aitor and Toby. A
helicopters is flying over the street: one person jumps and shoots Aitor and
Toby. Both die immediately.

10. Bin Laden and the three criminals are the most dangerous terrorists in the
World. They make a plan: attack Choto Fly, a hero, and his assistants.
Four days later, Bin Laden and his mates attack their enemies‟ den. Nobody
was there, because Choto Fly is in Spain, so Bin Laden comes to Spain. There
is a terrible fight and all of them die: peace returns to our planet.

Although the term "concentration camp" is often used as a term for all Nazi
camps, there were in fact several types of camps in the Nazi system, of which
the “concentration camp” was
just one.
As the war progressed, the
distinction between
concentration camps and
labor camps became blurred,
as hard labor was also
performed in the
concentration camps.
Chronologically talking, the use of concentration
camps can be divided into three distinct
periods:
From 1933 to 1936.
From 1936 to 1942.
And from 1942 to 1944/1945.
The standard of living conditions in the
Nazi concentration camps, varied
according to the period and camp.
From 1933 to 1936, the work, food,
and housing were bearable, and
12
13. most prisoners were detained for approximately a year.
The camp I‟m going to talk about is Stutthof; this camp was the first one the
Nazis built out of Germany, it was located in the environs of the city of Danzig
(in Poland) and it was also the last camp to be set free in May 1945.
The first prisoners arrived in the camp on September 2nd. 1939: 250 Polish
citizens. Two weeks later, on September
15th 1939, there were 6,000 prisoners
in the camp: prisoners of war, scientists,
etc… Most of them were executed by
the SS.
The commander of the camp was SS
officer Max Pauli. After the war, Max
Pauli was tried by an Allied tribunal and
sentenced to death. The security officer
of the camp was SS Captain Werner
Hoppe. Despite the evidence of his
participation in hundreds of murders, the
court sentenced Werner Hoppe to nine
years in prison.
The camp was composed of 8 barracks
for the inmates and a huge building (the
"kommandantur") for the SS. It was
called "the old camp".
In 1942, the SS began to build a "new"
camp: 30 barracks were added. In 1943,
the Nazis added a crematory and a gas
chamber. The gas chamber had a
maximum capacity of 150 people at one
time.
When the SS had too many people to
execute, they also used wagons as gas
chambers. Between September 2nd
1939 and May 10th 1945, 127,000 prisoners were registered upon their arrival
in the camp. The lowest estimation of the number of victims is 85,000. The real
number is certainly much higher: the inmates who were selected for immediate
execution at their arrival were not registered.
One of the worst crimes committed by the Nazis has been in Stutthof. Professor
Rudolf Spanner, an SS officer and "scientist", was owner of a small soap
factory located in Danzig. In 1940, he invented a process to produce soap
from human fat. This "product" was called R.J.S. - "Reines Judische Fett" -
which means "Pure Jewish Fat".
Hundreds of inmates were executed for the
"production" of soap. Rudolf Spanner was
very proud of his invention. Following
testimonies of some survivors, he used to
13
14. spend hours and hours just to admire his "invention". At the liberation, the Allies
discovered chambers full of corpses used for the production of soap. After the
war, Rudolf Spanner was not arrested and continued his "researches"...
There was no sanitary system, although the barracks were in awful
condition. They were mostly Jews in this camp, but also were some political
prisoners, and they were treated the same way as the others.
It was placed in here:
Testimony by Marian Kampinski
“Transports with new arrivals came into camp daily. The new arrivals were
mostly Hungarians.”
“I never thought that such conditions
like those I experienced first in the
ghetto, then at Auschwitz, then at
Stutthof, could exist or that they could
get progressively worse. We went
from one state of inhuman conditions
to a further state of inhuman
conditions. It was like going from one
level of hell to a deeper level of hell.
The stench, the crowding, the
disease, the hunger, the cold was
unbearable, but I kept the challenge of
survival foremost in my mind and did
my best to endure.”
“People started dying more frequently;
the death toll went up daily. Every night we lay shoulder-to-shoulder with the
dead and dying.”
I took this testimony from her book “Remember Me”

PHILOSOFICAL ELEMENTS IN THE NOVEL
The philosophy of Saint Thomas Aquinus was the marvel of the Middle Ages and the
crown jewel of Catholic scholarship. Yet, Aquino‟s philosophy was in many ways the
culmination of 1,600 years of Greek philosophy. In fact, Aristotle gave Saint Thomas the
tools he needed to prove the reasonableness and rationality of the Catholic faith. This
unique blend of pagan wisdom (Aristotle) and revealed one (the Scriptures and teachings
of the church) was called Scholastic philosophy.
Nominalism, whose most important figure was William of Ockam, is a philosophical stream
which claims that faith and reason are impossible to combine. Theology takes care of faith
and philosophy is in charge of the rational point of view, a rational explanation of Nature.
THE BACKGROUND:
MEDIEVAL SOCIETY
THE THREAD: THE DISPUTE: FAITH
MONKS‟ CRIMES VERSUS REASON
Jorge of Burgos claims that knowledge doesn‟t
change. I mean, the truth is permanent (the Bible
says so) and it cannot be changed. They dodge
(hiding or destroying) any other alternative
answer. It seems that religion is based in mere
fear; they dread the eternal pain or whatever. So,
if laugh kills fear, why is religion needed? The
Church would become unnecessary because
people wouldn‟t be afraid.
As seen before, Aristotle was the man of the
moment: his ideas were fascinating; they
charmed the monks. Whatever he said, it
became true. If he supported laugh and laughed
destroys the Church, this would be a real
danger. Thus, God‟s will had to be enacted.

INVENTIONS (I): IPOD WATCH WITH
WIRELES SYSTEM
A new ipod model has been created: the ipod watch. It mixes the old ipod touch
and a new elastic belt in a range of colours.
It can perform very useful functions, such as surfing the internet, listening to
music and even making phone calls. However, that is not all: it also includes a
new way of listening to our music: the wireless head phones. You will be able to
listen to your favourite songs without any wires.
Besides, its bluetooth helps you to update your files easily.
INSTRUCTIONS: They are extremely simple. You just have to press the on/off
button in order to switch on your watch. Later, you will be able to explore all the
different applications of your watch thanks to the touch screen with its different
menus.
INVENTIONS (II): NUCLEAR SHARPENER
Martín García González (4º ESO B)
If you don‟t like spending your time sharpening your pencils; if you hate when
your pencils are easiily broken, if you need to buy a new sharpener every
week... DON‟T WORRY: WE HAVE THE SOLUTION!!!
We are proud to present THE NUCLEAR SHARPENER!!!!!
The most useful device in the History of Humanity; a tool that will revolutionize
the XXI century. The one that will stop most of our problems and will lead us to
a perfect society! The nuclear sharpener receives the power from its mini-
nuclear reactor: it can sharpen about 89 pencils in a minute. With a great style,
designed by Yoryo Arm-any, it will be the best sharpener at school! It‟s very
easy to recharge: you just need 2grams of Uranium, 3 of polonium, and 3 or 4
peas. You can find all these products in the best-known shopping centres.
How doest it work? You only need to put a pencil into the sharperner; then
press the red button to turn on the reactor, wait for three seconds, and then
push the green button to sharpen the pencil. If you want to turn it off, push the
blue button.
Please, NEVER throw this product with your rubbish: it may have apocaliptical
consequences. MAKE SURE you wash your hands after using this product: if
you feel your food has a strange flavour, call urgently 123456790. NEVER put
the sharpener near the fire: a catastrophe might destroy our fantastic world.

Located in the west part of Switzerland, and in the eastern part of France, the
LHC (Large Hadron Collider ) is the most expensive and biggest experiment of
the human being. It is the world's largest and highest-energy particle
accelerator. It is in Ginebra, in the CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche
Nucléaire ) and it was created to verify some experiments related with the
atoms. It tries to verify the laws of nature related with the mass and the matery.
The LHC lies in a tunnel 27 km in circumference and it consists in a very huge
particle accelerator which increase the energy of some ions and makes an
impact between them trying to understand the first times of the universe like the
Big Bang. It started to work in 2008 but there was some problem with an helium
tank so it has to be fixed and it wasn‟t until 2009 when it was produced the first
impact.
More than 2000 physics has worked on this proyect and more than 34 countries
has given money to its construction. It has costed more than 2500 million of
euros. In only two years, physics have been able to verify some important laws,
the most famous one: the Einstein formula: E mc 2
Nowadays, they are working in the most important experiment that they have
tried until now, they are searching an atom particle called the Higgs Boson and
if it exists, physics would been able to demostrate why everything has mass.
But, everything related with the LHC isn‟t good, for example, it was reported by
a man to the Hawaii courts because of many reasons like the possiblity of
destroying the world if something worng happens in the LHC but the scientific
community repel that idea because it hasn‟t any scientific demostration.
Another thing, was that when the LHC was founded, an Indian girl killed herself
throwing throuhg a window because she thought that the world was going to
dissapear.
Recently, Sthephen Hawking has said that most of the experiments which are
investigated in the LHC are irrelevant and the most important ones are the
discovery of new dimensions or the possibility of travelling to the future.
Nobody knows what will happen with LHC but anyway it will help to understand
better where we come from and why life exists.

Rock music is a genre of popular music that entered the mainstream in the
1960s. It has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, rhythm and blues,
country music and also drew on folk music, jazz and classical music. The sound
of rock often revolves around the electric guitar, bass guitar, drums, and
keyboard instruments such as hammond organ, piano, or, since the late 60s,
synthesizers.
A group of musicians specializing in rock music is called a rock band or rock
group. Many rock groups consist of an electric guitarist, lead singer, bass
guitarist, and a drummer, forming a quartet.

1. Marcos, do you like being a teacher?
I really love this job despite the nervous breakdown I suffer when I mark some
of your exams. I‟ve always loved it. This profession provides me with the
chance of helping my students not only with the learning of History but also, as
a class teacher, to clarify and define their future personalities in many domains;
punctuality, accountability, discipline, respect and self-respect, teamwork,
proactivity… in short, some values I firmly believe in, that will help to make
easier their (your) adult life.
Nevertheless, it‟s true: Sometimes I feel like preaching in the desert...
2. When did you decide to become a teacher?
I guess that I did when as a student I came across with a fantastic teacher and
role model: my Maths teacher Mr. Geijo. Mathematics was not the most
important subject I learnt with him but the vocation of being a good example. I
have always thought ever since that the best way of teaching values is being a
good example to follow.
3. How old were you when you started to work?
I was 25 years old when I passed my state exam and started working as a
teacher in Comunidad Valenciana.
4. Why did you choose history?
History was my favorite subject at school along with some other humanistic
disciplines. I've been surrounded by History, Art, and Music books even before I
can remember so when the time came for me to choose a degree in University I
decided to attend to the Faculty of Geography and History in Oviedo.
5. Is it very difficult to teach students of our age?
Maybe the hardest side of teaching 4th ESO is to make the students understand
this is a turning point in their academic life. This grade is the end of the
compulsory education and as you should understand so far, the level of
contents you have to learn is increasing proportionally, just as much as the
effort required.
6. Do you prefer to teach in English or in Spanish?
I feel comfortable in both languages but teaching in English is a new and
thrilling experience. Since this is my first year in the CLIL bilingual project I have
to fix my methodology with the trial and error method, so I‟m learning so much.
I‟m so excited with the drafting of the notes and the preparation of some other
materials for my lessons. The Bilingual learning is a fantastic and useful option I
wish I had had available when in school. You kids should feel lucky and
thankful!
19
20. 7. In wich language are the results better
Believe it or not the results are better for those students using English as a tool
language in their exams.
8. Have you ever taught History in other high schools?
I've taught before in Comunidad Valenciana. The Bilingual education there is
approached in a slightly different way.
9. Have you ever traveled with the students?
Certainly, in the past I used to go with my students of 1º BAT every two years. I
joined to several study trips in Grenade-Cordova-Seville and also in Italy. Since
I have new personal responsibilities I have to say no to such projects but I like
to get involved in closer and shorter day trips.
10. What is your favorite topic in History?
There are many fascinating passages in History. The best thing of reading
History books is that you can always recognize in the present similar events,
anecdotes, biographies, conflicts etcetera that happened long ago. They say
History repeats itself once and again. The knowledge of the past helps you to
understand the present and shows you how to be on your guard before the
future.
11. Can you recommend us a History TV program?
You can find fantastic TV programs on history in the Internet. It's quite easy.
"Memoria de España" is an ambitious project that collects the whole Spanish
history. The chapters regarding the 19th and 20th century are very useful for
some of the contents of 4oESO.
The British are also very keen on history- if you type "BBC documentary" in the
youtube you‟ll surely find interesting stuff, no matter the period of history.
12. Do you think that the films related with history helps us to study?
Yes, Definitely. It helps you to empathize with the cosmogony of every age of
History. It's useful not only for the contents but also to learn how the people of
the past talked, dressed, thought and suffered. The problem is that the more
you learn about history the more demanding you turn about the plot, costume
and the historical characters depicted in the film. Unfortunately not all the
productions you can find are historically accurate.
13. To finish the interview, who is your favorite historical character?
There‟re plenty of them. Now I'm reading a biography on Talleyrand, the French
Foreign affairs minister in the times of Napoleon. This diplomat is the perfect
example of survivor. He managed to rise as a leading figure of the Ancien
Régime, the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Empire, and the Restoration.
As you know those regimes were antithetical so Talleyrand was a little foxy
turncoat, able to row in favour and against the stream. You have to be quite
smart to remain afloat after a hundred storms in the sea.

21. Robert G Moore
It is great to be teaching here in Mieres. First I would like to say that I
have really enjoyed getting to know the students and teachers of IES Sanchez
Lastra. I was really happy to find out that many students are interested in
learning English! I can‟t wait to teach you interesting things about the United
States and I hope that you will tell me more about Mieres and the rest of
Asturias.
Teaching in Spain is much different than teaching in the United States. I
noticed that you have your lockers in the classrooms. In the United States our
lockers are located in the hall. Could someone tell me why I have to walk to the
student‟s classroom? In the U.S.A. students change from classroom to
classroom and the teachers get their own classroom. You are very lucky to
have your own classroom!
I have to say that I have really enjoyed hearing some of your stories in
class. Some of the jokes I heard were great while others were so silly that they
were actually funny. The other day a student walked into the classroom and I
asked him: Why are you late? He said: There was a man that lost a hundred
Euro bill. I said: That‟s nice. Were you helping him look for it? The student
said: No. I was standing on it. I asked the students what they had learned in
class that day. The students said to me: don‟t be late to class and don‟t lose
your money in this class.
Live, love, learn and laugh and enjoy your school year!
OUR STUDENTS’ OPINION
Well, I want to explain who Robert is. Robert is the new American
teacher of English at my school.
He is very fun. We have our lesson with him on Fridays. He always
comes to class with fun exercises.
The most interesting thing is that in our classes we speak a lot of
English, and this is very important to find a good job in the future.
For example, the other day we played a special bingo. First he
explained how to play and then we asked a lot of questions and it
was really fun.
He is very patient with all the students.
21
22. He is our teacher/helper of English. He comes from Ohio, USA.
He is about 1.79 cm tall, with blond hair and blue eyes.
In my opinion, he is a very interesting person, honest and affable. He
teaches so well and he doesn’t have any problems with anybody.
When he is angry, he never shouts like Spanish teachers. He is quiet and my
classmates shut up. Awesome!
Pelayo Martinez – 2º B
We have a new teacher from the USA. His name is Robert.
He is tall with blue eyes and very good-looking. He is nice, kind and
always happy. He speaks English very well, of course, and the
activities we do in his class are very interesting. He is the perfect
teacher!

“In the firts term, we did our own “San Silvestre” race. We ran about six
laps around the court. It was a competition between 1ºB and 1ºA.in my opinion,
we did it very well. 1ºB won, and in our class the first were Álvaro and Paula
Rubio, and in 1º A Claudia and Hinault won. After the race, some of us were
very tired.
In Mieres there was a “San Silvestre”, too. It was on the 3º of December.
I didn´t run because I was sick, but I would like to go.
My mum saw it and told me that my class mate won the race and he was
Álvaro. Cristina was the third, Aitor was the second, Omar the fifth, Miguel the
seventh and Enol the eigth.
I hope that next year I could run the race.”
Paula Martos Fernández (1ºB)
“Our San Silvestre´s race was fantastic. Both classes tried to do our best.
We ran only six laps but at the end we were very tired. Any people run better
than us but we tried to do the better possible. I ran the San Silvestre´s race in
the Town Hall Garden. I was the seventh but the race was very funny. Enol, me
and Armando (our friend) arrived at the same time and he recieved a big prize.
Aitor was the second and recieved a premium too. Cristina was the third. After
the race a man asked Álvaro if he played football or running and he said yes.
The man asked Álvaro if he wanted to be in the running team and he said no.”

Normally, our P.E. lessons are at school: we have them in the sports centre or
play in the yard if it is not raining, but on 14th October, the students of 2nd ESO
from IES Sanchez Lastra went for a long walk. It was a special PE lesson that
we enjoyed a lot.
We went to Cenera, a valley not very far from Mieres.
We left school at twenty past nine in the morning. Our route was Mieres, Seana,
Paxio, Valdecuna and Cenera.
We walked about three hours and then we stopped to have a snack and a rest.
We needed it.
After that we went on walking. When we arrived to „El Molin‟, a very popular
restaurant, it was almost one o‟clock.
We had lunch there and then we played football, took pictures and had fun.
Then we came back to school, of course walking, but this part was easier
because we didn‟t hike.
We stopped to drink some water from a font on our way back, and we played
with it. In fact, I finished soaked.
We arrived to school at two o‟clock. All of us were exhausted but it was a great
day. We think that it is very good to have these activities: we do physical activity
and have fun.

24. I expected big changes when I
started University, and there have
been many, but not as many as I
thought. As teachers don‟t take care
about their students, they only
explain their lessons and we have to

wherever we can.
That means that marks are not as
good as we would like, but everyone
says you cannot expect to pass all I live in a flat with two other girls and
