3. Why have a website?
• It’s your ‘shop window’, available globally 24/7.
• You can put it on your business card, advertising leaflet,
magazine advert (for example) and people can look up
all about what you do, why you do it, what you sell, etc.
• People can see examples of your work (pictures,
slideshows), watch a video, etc.
• If your website is well designed, it can bring you new
customers when people search online using ‘keywords’
(words and phrases important to your business).
4. Possible costs involved
• domain name (around £10 per year)
• web space (from free to around £15+ per
month)
• web design fee if you are using a web designer
(from around £200-£300, but advanced
features such as shopping cart and online
forums will cost more)
5. Things to consider
• The domain name (www. ) is important – ideally should
include some keywords, .com is best.
• Content! Look at competitors’ websites to see what they
do well and badly.
• Style! Look at other people’s websites to see what you
like / dislike.
• Make sure it’s easy to contact you from every page.
• Think about what are the important bits you want people
to be able to see without scrolling down.
6. Promoting your website
• It is important to update your website regularly
(ideally at least once a week, even if it’s just a
small change).
• You can ‘blog’ (write an online article, with a link
to your own website on it)
• Use social media – Twitter, Facebook, etc
7. Search Engines
• Google gives webpages a ‘page rank’ (0 – 10,
with 10 being the most important)
• Make sure that Google, Yahoo! and other search
engines ‘know’ about your website
• You can submit your website address at http://
www.google.co.uk/addurl/
8. Online tools
• It is possible to analyse info about who is looking
at your website, eg. using ‘Google Analytics’
• It may be worth considering advertising, eg. with
Google Adwords
• You can check whether your website is HTML
compliant (conforms to web standards) -
