Sample dialogue: Cheol-su and Ji-hye Visit Heaven Lake
Cheol-su and Ji-hye are travelling in northeast China. In this dialogue, they
visit Heaven Lake on Mount Baekdu.
Ji-hye: I’ve seen so many pictures of Heaven Lake (천지). I can’t
believe we’re actually here!
Cheol-su: It’s beautiful, isn’t it? Look at the shimmering water!
Look at the mist (안개)!
Ji-hye: Many people in South Korea say that it’s difficult to see
Heaven Lake. I suppose we’re very lucky to be able to see it!
Cheol-su: Yes, we’re very lucky, but there’s something else that
I’m hoping to see…
Ji-hye: Really? What?
Cheol-su: I’m hoping to see a jade dragon (玉龍).
Ji-hye: A jade dragon? Don’t be ridiculous!
Cheol-su: I’m not joking. There’s a legend (전설) about a jade
dragon. The jade dragon fell in love with a goddess (여신). Later,
the goddess turned into a pine tree (소나무), and the jade dragon
went to live in Heaven Lake on Mount Baekdu.
Ji-hye: Well, I can’t see any jade dragons in the water. How about
you?
Cheol-su: The jade dragon is probably shy (수줍어한). There are
so many tourists (관광객).
Ji-hye: That’s true. Heaven Lake is very popular with tourists.
