Some of the first social reform in the United States centered on passing laws to prevent child labor. Many
people, such as ‘Mother Jones’, attempted to reform the social issue of child labor.

Over time, the reforms and movements became successful to stop child labor, but during the Industrial
Revolution, it still occurred.
Is the Social Problem still an issue today? How?
Child labor is not an issue today.There are many laws that provide an age requirement and maximum
work hours.The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 prohibited employment of minors.

People rioted because of the horrible conditions of the tenements.TheTenement House Act of 1867 was
passed which set regulations for tenement housing.

During the revolution, the poor conditions of the tenements were not addressed successfully. New
tenements were being built because of the growth of population, but the conditions were still very poor.
They were very crowded and unsanitary.
Is the Social Problem still an issue today? How?
Tenement housing is not an issue today in the United States. Many laws were put into place to limit
these overcrowded buildings and to ensure the safety of the citizens.

Ministers such asWashington Gladden and other reformers started the Social Gospel Movement.This
was a social movement wherein Christians were urged to improve the social condition for the poor.

These movements helped some of the poor population, but it still was not enough to completely close
the gap between the rich and poor.
Is the Social Problem still an issue today? How?
There is still a gap between the rich and poor in America.There are many people who are homeless, and
there are many people, such as celebrities, who have millions of dollars.
