After the operation, the OR nurse is also the one who will endorse the patient to the PACU or post-anesthesia care unit where the patient will be observed and handled by the PACU nurse. The route towards being an OR nurse isn’t that difficult, but it isn’t easy, as well considering that you still need to pass your four year nursing degree, then pass the NCLEX to get your license and wait to be hired in a hospital for the said position. Given the fact that the operating room is a special environment, most hospitals don’t really hire new nurse graduates to be OR staff nurses. The usual pathway for a new graduate nurse who wants to be an OR nurse is to apply for another position first such as being a medical-surgical nurse just so he can gain experience. After a few months, he can pass his application to be a OR/Surgical nurse and wait for any vacancies. In order to increase your chances of being hired as an OR nurse, it is crucial that you take as much seminars and trainings that you can because it will back you up during the application process aside from the fact that you already have substantial hospital experience. More so, while you are preparing for your entry as an OR nurse, you should make use of your time to read a lot about the SOPs inside the OR, as well as the basic knowledge that you need to know such as the different instruments, the concept of perioperative nursing, your responsibilities as an OR nurse and so on.
