1. AUTOPOLYMERIZING ACRYLIC RESIN
COMPOSITION
a. POWDER
Polymer - Poly (methyl methacrylate)
- Benzoyl peroxide initiator – 0.2-0.5%.
- Pigment, about 1% ground into polymer particles.
b. LIQUID
Monomer - Methyl methacrylate
- 0.006% hydroquinone – inhibitor.
- Activator – Dimethyl-p-toluidene.
COMPARISON WITH HEAT CURED ACRYLIC RESIN
- It is activated by dimethyl-p-toluidene and hence called
cold curing, autopolymerizing or chemically activated materials.
- The porosity of self cured materials is greater which may
be due to air dissolved in the monomer which is not soluble in the
polymer at room temperature.
- In general, self cured materials have lower average
molecular weights and higher residual monomer contents – of the order
of 2-5%.
- Self cured materials have less strength. The transverse
strength is about 80% of that of heat cured materials.
- They show greater distortion in use.

2. - The colour stability of self cured materials is poorer; if a
tertiary amine activator is used, yellowing over a period of time can
occur.
Uses:
- It is used for construction of special trays for impression
making with incorporation of inert fillers.
- For denture repair, relining and rebasing.
- In removable orthodontic appliances.
- In making record bases in complete denture treatment.
