This document discusses when pollination is the limiting ecosystem service for crops. It analyzes data from studies of four main crops in the EU: field beans, oilseed rape, strawberries, and buckwheat. The data shows that pollination had the largest positive effect on yield for buckwheat, providing over an 80% increase in fruit weight. Pollination had a much smaller effect on yield for field beans and oilseed rape, which can be wind-pollinated. The document concludes that pollination is most likely to be limiting for crop yield when pollinator visits and richness are low.
