This document evaluates potential media institutions that could distribute a low-budget, gritty social realist thriller film called "Embers". It analyzes why Studio Canal would be a good fit, as they previously distributed the similar 2014 film "Catch Me Daddy". Studio Canal is a French film company that vertically integrates production, distribution, and marketing, and has experience with films across a wide range of genres. Marketing would primarily involve film festival exhibition and promotion of positive reviews to build awareness of the £800,000 budgeted production.

This is the production company that would potentially produce our film. They are a french film company that
have vertically integrated into different aspects including film production, film distribution, and marketing. They
are seeking to produce film on a commercial level, and become a European dominant film company, which
could potentially compete with the ‘big six’.
Subsidiary of Vivendi
European company that
follows a hollywood
structure
They have produced and distributed films like:
• Non-Stop
• Shaun of the dead
• Cuban Fury
• Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa
• Catch Me Daddy
They tend to produce and distribute a
wide range of products from very British
dramas like ‘Catch Me Daddy’ to big
budget action films like ‘Non-Stop’

This film has influenced my decision towards choosing ‘Studio
Canal’ as my production and distribution company.
Film specifications:
• Produced by Emu films
• Distributed by Studio Canal
• Director: Daniel Wolfe
Cannes 2014 Review:
“This debut from Daniel Wolfe – featuring tremendous cinematography
from Robbie Ryan – is a tense, troubled and troubling thriller about a
British Pakistani girl on the run”
• This film shares similarities with my thriller ‘Embers’.
• It is a low budget social realist drama
• It is distributed by studio canal
• Visually, it looks similar to the way I envisioned my film to
look
• It was marketed mostly through film festivals
• It stars unknown actors that have a lot of talent

Companies such as vertigo, entertainment one, and
altitude films would have all been sufficient companies
to distribute my film. However I chose Studio Canal
because, after researching the type of film they
distribute, it is very likely that they would distribute a
film such as mine; a gritty social realist thriller. Catch me
daddy, only released in 2014, was a successful film. It is
very likely that studio canal would choose to distribute a
film similar to this (Ember’s) because it proved to be a
success before it is likely to happen again.
It is very likely that many companies would distribute this
film not just one. Deals would be made pre-release at
film festivals, with american companies to gain various
distributers.

• Assuming the film would be funded by companies like
Film4 and the national lottery, a budget of around
£800,000 would be a reasonable figure
• The film has no pre-sold elements, and not predicted to
be a guaranteed success
• The film would partner with other companies to reduce
the risk of loosing a large investment
• A low budget UK Feature Fuelled by Plot and
character
• A visceral and gritty social realist Thriller
• Bleak in Theme and Mood (opens with brutal
violence)
7. D I S T R I B U T I O N A N D M A R K E T I N G
• Studio Canal have their own production and distribution company. Therefore the film will
be almost entirely produced and distributed by them.
This film is produced on a low budget and
therefore not a large amount of money will be
fed towards the marketing scheme.
The film will release teaser posters and
trailers prior to the films release
Film Festival exhibition will be a vital
part of the marketing campaign. We
would rely on the quality of the
product with the intention to grow
awareness by receiving positive
reviews and awards.
