2. The main technique used in this video is mirroring, a simple yet extremely
effectively used technique. Nicolas Provost uses footage from the film
‘Rashomon’ (1950), which depicts a tale of a woman being raped and a man
being a murdered from different perspectives. The footage used shows a woman
doing a ritual while 2 men watch, Nicolas Provost mirrors the frames on a
longitudinal axis creating artistic outer-worldly images that capture the viewer’s
attention.
The music used in this experimental video is drone like in a way that gives the
video’s a events a constant rhythm which is effectively hypnotising as it keeps
the audience interested and keen to the changes in the music and the events
that occur on screen.
There is a climax in the video 1:26
where a woman can be seen falling to
the ground with a distressed facial
expression, this action is accompanied
by a continuous static noise which
catches the viewer by surprise and
makes the viewer watch intently as
the woman’s frustration unravels to
the music.
3. As the woman falls the mirrored effect
is split twice, with the image being split
it creates a further understanding of the
current emotion and atmosphere of the
video as the music does not quieten
down or fade out ; it adds to the
atmosphere as the viewers eyes are
working to keep up with the action
which in turn is frustrating.
The music then fizzles out quite literally
as a loud fizzling sound is heard, quite
similar to the sound of white noise. As
the music fizzles out so does the image
of the lady. This happens because the
longitudinal axis is brought in so all you
can see is the piece of fabric that is on
the bottom of her dress.
I believe that this piece was carried by
the artistic effect used and the music
and actresses facial expressions to
convey what mood should be felt at
what time.
4. The genre the song is R’n’B and in this music video the genre established
through the use a smooth panoramic view, low key lighting and a warm toned
colour scheme. Most R’n’B songs are slow paced making the video match up
with the pace and the feel of the song. This song is about a one night romance
so the low key lighting and the warm red and earthy brown tones add to and
sets the mood of the song and the atmosphere as red is the recognised colour
of romance, love and passion.
I believe the smooth panoramic view, the low key lighting and the warm
colours were appointed to allow the audience to understand the singer and
also the meaning of the song creatively and allow the audience to be on
somewhat the same creative wavelength.

Earthy red

5. The mood of the music video is ‘damp’ and laid back I say this because the singer’s
body language is laid back and relaxed and his facial expressions within the first 30
seconds express a somewhat dampened spirit as he does not look up towards the
camera during that time.
The video is shot in a quality looking hotel room which is dimly lit, this is
presumably where the one night stand took place I believe this gives the viewer
some imagery as to where it took place and the lyrics give the viewer imagery of
what occurred in that hotel room.
The camera angle is at eye level and at times slightly above the singer, I believe this
is because the audience is supposed to feel as if they can relate to the singer on a
common level. The singer is not very well lit which takes slight attention away from
him and importance, the light is mainly
Focused on the background,
which could show that the singer
wants the audience to focus on
the setting and what events took
place there rather than his
presence.
The fact that the artist is dimly lit casts a element of unimportance to him in a
sense that he is down to earth, he is levelling with the audience and simply,
truthfully talking about the events which took place.
6. This video quite fast paced to show how quickly decisions are being made
and to match the pace of the song. The video starts with the same frame
and ends with the same frame giving some sort of resolution as to what
happened in the beginning of the video.
There are 2 main characters in this video however we only see the face of
one of them as we are using the male character as a POV.
The music video is mainly focusing on the actress’s facial expressions and
also how the props are handled, the video shows 3 different occurrences
and outcomes all of which are dependent on how the male character reacts
to the female and people around him.
In the first scenario the female rips up the receipt leading to her being the
‘bad apple’ and leading thefts, in the second scenario the male rips up the
receipt and becomes the ring leader and lastly the male pays and he does
the right thing.
7. There are a lot of cuts throughout the video some 5
are straight cuts and others are cuts where the
camera moves to the left and then the current
frame blends with the next frame. within some
shots the camera pans across what ever room the
man is in as to recreate what someone would
naturally do when entering the room.

The beginning frame of the video is exactly
the same as the ending frame of the video, 1
this is effective because the story comes full
circle and is explained to the viewer it is also
an effective method of storytelling because
the beginning frame would lead the viewer to
ask questions and carry on watching so that
the questions are answered.
