What is obesity?
Research has shown that more than half of the of the United States (U.S) population are either
obese or overweight. It’s important you take note that being obese is different from being
overweight.
Health care providers in the U.S use the Body Mass Index (BMI), which is a measure
(comparison) of your weight in relation to your height, to define overweight and obesity.
People who have a BMI between 25 and 30 are considered overweight, while obesity is defined
as having a BMI of 30 and above.
When people are more than 100 pounds (45.3 kilograms) overweight, it is considered morbid
obesity.

Treatment for obesity
Everyone knows that there are many weight loss methods available but many of the methods
are ineffective and short-term, particularly for those who are morbidly obese. Among the
morbidly obese, less than 5 percent succeed in losing a significant amount of weight and
maintaining that weight loss without surgical programs, so even after losing weight you must
still maintain a combination of dieting, behavior modification therapy and exercise.
Many people do lose weight without surgery, when they work with certified health care
professional to develop effective weight loss program or use known medication plus exercise.
One problem is that most U.S health insurance companies don't cover weight loss surgery
unless people first make serious effort to lose weight using non-surgical approaches. That’s
something that needs to change because rejecting citizens desired insurance on the ground of

Phentermine is similar to the family of drugs called amphetamine. It stimulates the central
nervous system (nerves and brain), which increases your heart rate and blood pressure and
decreases your appetite.
Phentermine is used together with diet and exercise to treat obesity, especially in people with
risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes.
(2). Methamphetamine
Crystal methamphetamine is the most powerful of the amphetamine drug family and should be
on top of the list but it’s difficult to get. Secondly, because it’s a medication of last resort, only
prescribed when everything else has failed to cause an obese person lose weight, so only few
people have used it. It is a central nervous system stimulant. It affects chemicals in the brain
and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control.
Methamphetamine is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Methamphetamine is also used to treat obesity in people who have not lost weight with diets
or other treatments.
Methamphetamine may also be used for other purposes not listed in this guide.

(3). Desoxyn
Desoxyn is a central nervous system stimulant and is considered as legal crystal
methamphetamine (meth). It affects chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to
hyperactivity and impulse control.
Desoxyn is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is also to treat
obesity in people who have not lost weight with diets or other treatments.
Desoxyn may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
(4). Topamax
Topamax (topiramate) was originally FDA-approved as a seizure medicine, also called an
anticonvulsant. Topiramate is used to treat seizures in adults and children who are at least 2
years old.
Topamax is also used to prevent migraine headaches in adults and teenagers who are at least
12 years old. This medicine will only prevent migraine headaches or reduce the number of
attacks. It will not treat a headache that has already begun.
(5). Adipex-P
Adipex-P (phentermine) is a prescription medicine similar to amphetamine. Phentermine

blood pressure and decreases your appetite.
Adipex-P is used together with diet and exercise to treat obesity, especially in people with risk
factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes.
(6). Topiramate
Topiramate is a seizure medicine, also called an anticonvulsant. Topiramate is used to treat
certain types of seizures in adults and children who are at least 2 years old. Trokendi XR is for
use in adults and children who are at least 6 years old.
Some brands of topiramate are also used to prevent migraine headaches in adults and
teenagers who are at least 12 years old. These medicines will only prevent migraine headaches
or reduce the number of attacks, but will not treat a headache that has already begun.

(7). Contrave
Contrave contains a combination of bupropion and naltrexone. Bupropion is an antidepressant
medicine that can also decrease appetite. Naltrexone is usually given to block the effects of
narcotics or alcohol in people with addiction problems. Naltrexone may also curb hunger and
food cravings.

Contrave is an anorexiant and is used to help manage weight in obese or overweight adults
with weight-related medical problems. This medicine is used together with diet and exercise.
Contrave will not treat any weight-related medical condition, such as high blood pressure,
diabetes, or high cholesterol.
(8). Bupropion
Bupropion is an antidepressant medication used to treat major depressive disorder and
seasonal affective disorder.
The Zyban brand of bupropion is used to help people stop smoking by reducing cravings and
other withdrawal effects.
Bupropion may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
(9). Phendimetrazine
Phendimetrazine is a sympathomimetic amine, which is similar to an amphetamine.
Phendimetrazine stimulates the central nervous system (nerves and brain), which increases
your heart rate and blood pressure and decreases your appetite.
Phendimetrazine is a prescription medicine that is used together with diet and exercise to treat
obesity.
(10). Orlistat, Alli, Xenical
Orlistat (brand names are Alli and Xenical) blocks some of the fat that you eat, keeping it from
being absorbed by your body.
Orlistat is used to aid in weight loss, or to help reduce the risk of regaining weight already lost.
This medicine must be used together with a reduced-calorie diet. Orlistat is for use only in
adults.
Xenical is the prescription strength form of orlistat and needs a prescription to use, while the
Alli brand is available without prescription.

How should weight loss be managed?
Weight loss medications do work and pharmaceutical companies across the world are tediously
working on more drugs. However, you need to incorporate your medication with dieting,
lifestyle change and exercise. Regular physical activity combined with a healthy diet is the most
effective way to not only lose weight, but keep it off over time. Exercise can help you burn
calories, reduce body fat, and lower your risk of numerous diseases, including diabetes, heart
disease, and some cancers.
The key is to choose activities that you enjoy and that can help you meet your weight loss goal
even if it’s just walking instead of driving. Their effect usually results in a loss of about 10% of a
person's body weight within 6 months or less. It’s important to note this down because
contrary to some unhelpful hopes, a weight loss medication doesn’t replace diet and exercise.
Weight loss drugs only work in conjunction with lifestyle changes.
You can lose all your weight if you really want. It all depends on the sacrifice you’re willing to
make towards its achievement.
You can lose weight by a combination of changing your diet, exercising, and taking medications.
Lifestyle changes are generally the most beneficial management behaviors because they can
help you maintain long-term weight loss and keep excess weight off. It is important to eat more
fatless foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and to avoid a diet high in saturated
fats and trans fats. Also avoid sweet drinks and do add more water to your diet. Women should
consume no more than 1,500 calories per day and men no more than 1,800 calories per day.
When exercising, aim for 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercise over 3 to 5 days
per week.

Lifestyle Modification
Lifestyle modification is crucial to the success of any weight-loss management plan. Lifestyle
therapy should include three components: (1). a reduced-calorie healthful meal plan, (2).
physical activity, and (3). behavior therapy. Again, any drug therapy for overweight and obesity
treatment should be used in conjunction with lifestyle modifications, not as standalone.
Diet
The reduction of calorie intake should be considered the cornerstone of any weight-loss and
weight-maintenance plan. Three options are available: (1). a 1,200 to 1,500 kcal/day diet for
women or a 1,500 to 1,800 kcal/day diet for men; (2). a diet that is 500 to 750 kcal less than the
patient’s usual diet; or (3). an evidence-based diet that restricts certain food types. Increased
consumption of nutrient-poor added fats, sugar, salt, and refined grains contributes to obesity.
A healthful diet should include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and high-quality
protein. Drinking more water and controlling portion sizes are two other behaviors that can
promote weight loss.
Exercise
Health-based weight loss requires a lifestyle change that includes daily physical activity. In
addition to promoting weight loss, exercise can lower the risk of many diseases and aid in stress
management. It is recommended to start with moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, such as
walking, running, cycling, or swimming, for at least 150 minutes weekly over 3 to 5 sessions per
week. It is recommended that you slightly increase the duration (number of minutes per
session) and frequency (number of days per week) of moderate-intensity activity before
increasing the intensity. Start with a low level physical activity and slowly integrate
moderate-intensity activities and so on until you reach the max you can tolerate. A higher level
of physical activity- approximately 200 to 300 minutes per week is recommended to maintain
weight loss and minimize weight regain for the long term. Resistance training should also be
incorporated to help promote fat loss while preserving lean mass. The key to exercise and
weight loss is to be physically active daily and consistently. Activities should be individualized
according to patient preference, taking into account any health-related or physical limitations.

What type of exercise should I choose?
Do moderate-intensity cardiovascular exercise for 20 to 60 minutes at least three to four days
per week. Daily exercise, however, is recommended for weight loss.
Choose low-impact activities, such as walking, swimming, cycling, and step aerobics. Group
exercise in the water is can be especially effective.
At least two days per week, follow a strength-training program with one to three sets of
exercises for the major muscle groups, with 10 to 15 repetitions. While aerobic exercise burns
more calories, strength training helps you preserve or even increase your lean muscle mass.
Start slowly and gradually progress the intensity and duration of your workouts.
Find an exercise partner to help keep you motivated and consistent about your workouts.
Set realistic weight-loss goals -- no more than one to two pounds per week -- and stick to a
healthy, calorie-controlled diet.
The key is to choose the type or types of exercise/s that you’re comfortable with. Don’t lift a
10kg load or run 10 kilometers because someone else did so. May be that’s the type of exercise
they’re comfortable doing. Choose your own exercise- the one you are comfortable doing.
It doesn’t really matter the type of exercise as long as you’ll be consistent. However, cardio
exercises guarantee not only an effective weight loss but also, a build-up of strong, lean
muscles, an enhanced cardiovascular and respiratory function and a great rush of endorphins as
you finish your exercising plan for the day!
Now, let’s look into some of the best cardiovascular exercises that you can perform. Cardio
exercises will also help you reduce any hypertension problems, high cholesterol levels,
strengthen your heart, increase your bone mass, strengthen your immune system and improve
your sleep apart from the other health benefits that come with cardiovascular training.

Walking
The longest living and most non-obese people in the world are Japanese. They do it simply by
eating non-fat foods and walking. More people in Japan prefer to walk for non-urgent
assignments than use a car. That’s how they keep fit from generation to generation. So, if the
weather is nice and warm, use the opportunity to walk at least 30 minutes a day, five days a
week, breathing fresh air and getting your heart rate to rise. Of course, we would recommend a
faster than normal walking speed to really get your cardio for the day!
Running
Running is yet another great way to get your heart pumping blood and those calories burning
up. Running is perhaps the most beneficial cardio exercise that does not require any equipment
to do so. It will ensure that all of the large muscle groups are involved in the process and with
that, burn more calories than ever.
Cycling
Get your bike out of the basement and enjoy the nice weather outside. Whether you will use
your bike recreationally or you will use it to get to work or the supermarket or to your friend’s
house instead of getting a taxi or the bus, use this fun opportunity to exercise your body and
burn calories.
Stair climbing
If you have stairs at your house or your apartment building, you can perform this great cardio
exercise. Stair climbing activates more muscles than regular walking, and that is why you should
use this quite simple yet effective exercise to burn as many calories as you can.
Swimming
Visit the local pool and get to swimming because this is yet another great exercise that involves
every single muscle, ensuring you that you will be on the fast track to lose weight. Make sure
that you practice swimming at least two to three times a week to ensure great results and in
the meantime, including some of the other cardio exercises already mentioned.
High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
If you have the energy and you want to focus on a workout routine that includes exercises
which will burn calories and build up muscles at the same time, we recommend choosing one of
the many High-Intensity Interval Training programs out there. This exercise program involves
short intervals of high intensity activities which are followed by short rest periods. It is known
to be among the best workout routines out there for losing weight and forming a nice-looking
body. Exercises which are most commonly a part of the HIIT are squats, mountain climbers,
lunges, burpees, planks, and many other popular exercises.
