Analysis –
Project X
In the opening of Project X all the characters are shown in a
various ways to establish their roles. The first protagonist is
shown standing outside the house looking directly towards the
camera speaking. This implies that he will play a key part
throughout the film because the film starts off with him
talking directly towards the camera which makes it seem that
he is preparing us for the rest of the film.
As the film progresses the first character that was shown to us
gets put on the spot by his friends mum which leads us to see
an over the shoulder shot of him looking up towards her. This
shot makes her look powerful her stance belittles the male as
her body language is very big and strong as she looks down to
him.
The main protagonist is shown in the shower hiding his body as
his friend tried to remove the shower curtain from covering
his body. This implies that he isn’t considered to be feared or
respected by his friend because he tried to interrupt him
during his shower which could have led to him being exposed.
In the opening of Project X all the settings shown are
all linked to the house.
The long shot of the house shows the big size of the
house which implies that they are wealthy as they
have a house that looks very expensive. It also shows
that the house will be playing a key part of the film
as the storyline is about a house party that goes out
of control.
The protagonist’s room is shown with a lot of
valuable content that implies that he is privileged to
have parents that were able to provide him with a
lot of resources.
The shots of the settings show that the family are
wealthy as they have flashy and expensive things
which can foreshadow the future in the film as they
might lose everything due to an act of stupidity.
The cinematography in the opening of Project X has a lot of
different camera shots that show the characters emotions
and helps identify some of their characteristics.
The close up shot of the protagonists shows him talking to
the camera which makes the comedic value of the film even
better as they include aspects from other sub-genres as him
talking to the camera makes it looks like a Mockumentary.
The long shot of the protagonist’s brushing his teeth show
that he is in some discomfort as his friend pulled a trick on
him. This also shows that he is a very easy target as his own
friends sees him as someone that is vulnerable and the
camera shot makes it look like he is being watched rather
than filmed as it is being filmed with a steadicam.
The shot of the protagonist’s mum shows that she is very
worried as the camera shot allows us to see her facial
expression. The camera is looking towards her through the
gap of the door which implies that we are listening and
looking at a conversation that was meant to be private as
the cameraman is eavesdropping.
