Increasing Popularity of
          SMS
•   Invented in 1985.

•   First message in UK in 1992

•   Initial growth was slow with
    customers in 1995 sending on
    average 0.5 texts a month

•   Became more popular as prices
    fell and number of handsets
    increased
    (Avg. 35texts/pm by 2000)

•   4.1 Trillion texts sent in 2008
    worldwide

•   Changed from a informational
    tool to a social tool
    (e.g sending jokes)
Use of Mobiles Whilst
       Driving
•   Using the phone whilst driving is
    just as bad as drink driving whilst
    under the influence of drink /
    drugs

•   In 2007 legislation put in place
    banning handheld use of mobiles
    whilst driving

•   Texting and using GPS is more
    distracting than using handheld
    mobile

•   Its the distraction that kills
    (inability to multitask)
Effect on Teen Language
        Abilities
•   Instant messaging and      •   34% of employers "were

•   Developers can create a variety of applications and
    sell them to make profit
Games on the Mobile

  monotone sounds and keypad for
  directional input (Snake)
• Developed to full 3D games with complex
  story lines real sound and touch/tilt input
• Average number of games on a device has
  increased
• Games used to be single player. Now they
  can be multiplayer over the internet
