  2. 2. WHAT IS BLACKWATER? <ul><li>Blackwater USA is a private military contractor operating on an international scale. </li></ul><ul><li>The company has since gained a reputation as the world’s largest military company. </li></ul>
  3. 3. COMPANY BACKGROUND <ul><li>In 1997, Erik Prince founded the company to provide training support to military and law enforcement organizations. </li></ul><ul><li>Gary Jackson became the president of the company, while Cofer Black became the vice chairman. </li></ul>

SERVICES OF BLACKWATER <ul><li>Blackwater USA was employed to assist the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, providing humanitarian support and temporary law enforcement. </li></ul><ul><li>The contractor has been one of five picked by the Department of Defense for its services in counter-narcotics activities. </li></ul>

SERVICES IN IRAQ <ul><li>In 2003, Blackwater was given its first high-profile contract for guarding a VIP in Iraq. </li></ul><ul><li>It is estimated that approximately 20,000 to 30,000 armed contractors are working in the country. </li></ul><ul><li>Between 2005 and 2007, Blackwater security staff was involved in 195 shooting incidents. </li></ul>

CONTROVERSIES IN IRAQ <ul><li>In March 2004, insurgents in Fallujah ambushed an American convoy, killing four Blackwater contractors and desecrating their bodies. </li></ul><ul><li>In December 2006, a security guard of the Iraqi vice president was shot and killed by a Blackwater employee accused of being drunk. </li></ul>

CONTROVERSIES IN IRAQ (CONT) <ul><li>In February 2006, a Blackwater sniper shot and killed three guards working for the state-funded Iraqi Media Network. </li></ul><ul><li>In May 2007, Blackwater contractors opened fire twice in two days, one of them provoking a standoff between them and Iraqi commandos. </li></ul>

BAGHDAD SHOOTINGS <ul><li>On September 17, 2007, Blackwater guards shot and killed 17 Iraqi civilians in Nisour Square, Baghdad. </li></ul><ul><li>The guards fired upon a Kia driving on the wrong side of the road, to which U.S. Army soldiers responded by firing back at the contractors. </li></ul>

ARMS SMUGGLING ALLEGATIONS <ul><li>Turkish forces have recovered U.S. made rifles and pistols from dead PPK militants. </li></ul><ul><li>Blackwater initially denied the claims, declaring them baseless. </li></ul><ul><li>A federal investigation was made involving the FBI, and in early 2007 two employees pled guilty to illegally shipping weapons. </li></ul>
