    • WHAT IS BLACKWATER?
      • Blackwater USA is a private military contractor operating on an international scale.
      • The company has since gained a reputation as the world’s largest military company.
    • COMPANY BACKGROUND
      • In 1997, Erik Prince founded the company to provide training support to military and law enforcement organizations.
      • Gary Jackson became the president of the company, while Cofer Black became the vice chairman.
    • SERVICES OF BLACKWATER
      • Blackwater USA was employed to assist the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, providing humanitarian support and temporary law enforcement.
      • The contractor has been one of five picked by the Department of Defense for its services in counter-narcotics activities.
    • SERVICES IN IRAQ
      • In 2003, Blackwater was given its first high-profile contract for guarding a VIP in Iraq.
      • It is estimated that approximately 20,000 to 30,000 armed contractors are working in the country.
      • Between 2005 and 2007, Blackwater security staff was involved in 195 shooting incidents.
    • CONTROVERSIES IN IRAQ
      • In March 2004, insurgents in Fallujah ambushed an American convoy, killing four Blackwater contractors and desecrating their bodies.
      • In December 2006, a security guard of the Iraqi vice president was shot and killed by a Blackwater employee accused of being drunk.
    • CONTROVERSIES IN IRAQ (CONT)
      • In February 2006, a Blackwater sniper shot and killed three guards working for the state-funded Iraqi Media Network.
      • In May 2007, Blackwater contractors opened fire twice in two days, one of them provoking a standoff between them and Iraqi commandos.
    • BAGHDAD SHOOTINGS
      • On September 17, 2007, Blackwater guards shot and killed 17 Iraqi civilians in Nisour Square, Baghdad.
      • The guards fired upon a Kia driving on the wrong side of the road, to which U.S. Army soldiers responded by firing back at the contractors.
    • ARMS SMUGGLING ALLEGATIONS
      • Turkish forces have recovered U.S. made rifles and pistols from dead PPK militants.
      • Blackwater initially denied the claims, declaring them baseless.
      • A federal investigation was made involving the FBI, and in early 2007 two employees pled guilty to illegally shipping weapons.
