MOVIE REVIEW OF SAATCHYA AAT
GHARAT…..
Our elders said…….
“Be back home by 7 in the evening”
This meant a whole a lot of values, moral discipline, love
and protection, a feeling of safety…
The movie is partly based upon true
incident that occurred in 2002 in the University of Pune
Campus. It is a movie about young friends. They had
decided about what to become in future. They were from
different backgrounds and different religious to complete
their studies. There is a generation that rejects
2. traditional values and pushes limits in the quest of being
“modern”.
The protagonist of the story is nandini
“nandu”. On one night they all went for valentine’s party
and remained till late night. Nandini and her boyfriend
Aniket, slip away from the crowed at a rave they were
attending, and find an isolated place to get cozy. As they
were getting intimate, a cop arrived on the scene and
demanded to see their ID cards. Then cops told him to
leave the girl (nandu) and ordered him to go and get his
id card. Flustered, Aniket left the scene, rushed home,
and got his id and returned to the place where he had
left the cop with Nandu. He found her there alone, badly
bruised and sobbing. She had been raped by the cop. He
took it to the hospital for treatment, but her ordeal was
just beginning. After that day the Pune society was
stirred and outraged by the incident. Their pent-up
frustration at western culture and its influence on their
children was taken out on nandini, who was critised for
inviting the trouble upon herself by wearing sexy clothing
that showed too much skin. She was expelled from the
university and allowed only to apper for the final exams.
3. Her hostel landlady kicked her out, as other parents
expressed concern that her living there would be a bad
influence on their girls.
Her boyfriend was as much traumatised by the event, and
he broke off the relationship saying that he could’nt deal
with it, and that even if he did, his parents would never
accept her. Eventually the cop responsible for the rape
was identically and arrested , at the trial he didn’t seem
at all remorseful, saying that she asked for it, being at a
lonely place at a night with scanty clothing on. “ I was
hungry, and she was a plate of food laying uncovered…”
I got the feeling that the movie director was trying to
make the point that society can avoid such depravity by
sticking to its traditional values-which I disagree with,
even I though I have traditional values myself. Nandini
was not raped by ones, but twice; the second time by the
societies unfair expectations of woman, while the cop
got away with a mere slap on the wrist.
At the end of the movie, Nandu’s friend Priya’s
grandmother comments that Ramayana is repeated in
every generation.
