Michael Fixer Throughout the 60’s, there was a lot of change in the world. This paper is going to focus mainly on the music and how it changed. In the early part of the 60’s, thousands of people were going to rock concerts. Most of the rock was influenced by other genres. For example, the mixture of gospel and blues led to the creation of soul music. Also, during the mid 60’s, the Byrds released an album that combined rock and folk music which started a new trend. Some artists, like The Beatles, were able to cross international boundaries. They were able to influence the youth on both sides of the Atlantic. In the late 60’s, everything started to go downhill. The hippie movement was out of control and LSD was all the rage. In addition, many famous musicians died. In the 50’s the lyrics for rock and roll music were upbeat and happy. They were about love and relationships. The tempo was anywhere between fast and very slow. There was little to no call and response in 50’s rock. The repetitive pattern ranged from 12 bar to 16 bar pattern. In addition, most songs during this time had a verse and refrain. Some of the instruments that were used in the 50’s were the acoustic guitar, drums, and bass and on occasion, there was a piano or a fiddle. Rock in the 60 has covered a broad spectrum of topics. Most of them were about waiting for something to happen or not understanding the world. The tempo ranged anywhere from fast to slow. Half the time there was a call and response. Most of the songs had a 16 bar repetitive pattern, while others had a 12 bar repetitive pattern. Some of the instruments used during this time were the tambourine, drums, electric guitar, snare and electric keyboard. Also, there were male and female singers. I think Jimi Hendricks was a better representation of the 60’s because he embodied the hippy movement... Jimi used a distortion pedal and a blues sound when he played his guitar. The artist I enjoyed the most was Jimi Hendricks. He was interesting and had a better sound. After listening to the Velvet Underground, I found their lyrics to be to erratic and hard to understand. If you like Jimi Hendricks, I would recommend listening to the Beatles, The Who and Ozzy Osborne ,[object Object]
