2. STAGES IN MAKING A
MUSIC VIDEO
When making a music video, there are multiple things that
need to be done.
• Research – Before creating a video, the most obvious thing to do
is research, this will involve researching everything from your
target audience, location too verifying actors etc. This is all vital
to the overall piece
• Production – The actual filming process where all the earlier
research is put into action, this will likely take lots of different
shoots in different location in order to fulfill the wanted video
• Post-Production – This is more finishing touches then anything
else, it involves editing the footage, which may take an extremely
long time, as well as removing parts that may not work. Also
transitions and editing to the sound
3. NECESSARY STAFF?
This all depends on the scale of the music video, if it’s a small
independent video, or a huge CGI music video etc.
Roles & Responsibilities

costumes, props, target audience, floor plan and location and directs an
effective video that covers all aspects that has been planned in the pre-
production.
• Assistant Director - Assists the director

characters in a film. The crew actors/actresses also work closely with the
director and cinematographer

• Cameraman - Shoots the video
4. WHY DO WE MAKE
MUSIC VIDEOS
• A music video is simply a advertising tool. It is there to
promote a song/artist. This video Is likely to be intriguing
to certain groups of people that the artist would usually be
compared with
• Videos are also used to create and image for an artist, it
maybe chosen by their producers etc. to help develop a
specific group of followers
• The main and simple purpose is for sales, its their to
advertise and therefore sell the product, being able to
promote multiple things makes it easier to bring in
revenue for the artist
5. SPIKE JONZE

and actor, whose work includes music videos, commercials,
films and television
Jonze is well known for his music video collaborations with;
• Daft Punk – ‘Da Funk’

director, his ability to create more thoughtful/deeper meaning
videos whilst creating incredible shots made him the well
renowned director he is.
6. EXPENSES
This is a factor which has massive variations depending on
scale of the music video, however these are averages.
• Sources may not be 100% accurate however from research
carried out in recent years its expected an average studio budget
is between $200,000-$500,000. This money obviously goes
towards multiple factors including location, equipment, actors
etc. However obviously some are more expensive than others.
• Michael Jackson’s song ‘Scream’ is recorded as the most
expensive video ever at $7,000,000
• On the other hand a Spike Jonze directed song by Fatboy Slim
‘Praise You’ only cost $800

used to be hard to find when we weren't as technologically
advanced as we are now.
The easiest place to find videos to current date is YouTube,
