Discover Hong Kong – Kowloon Markets
Hong Kong is one of the world’s most dynamic cities, with so much to see and do. If you’re visiting for the first time,
you may already have famous landmarks like the Avenue of Stars and the Po Lin Monastery on your list. But, for
those who want to experience the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong daily life, Kowloon has dozens of markets and
shopping streets just waiting to be explored. Here are some of the more unusual…
Jade Market
The Chinese character for Jade is a combination of the words for beauty and purity, but it is the association with long
life and good health that has made it a valued material in Chinese culture. It comes as no surprise, then, that
Kowloon’s Jade Market contains around 400 stalls of jewellery, trinkets and accessories fashioned from the muchloved green stone. This is definitely the place to go if you want to pick up an authentic good luck charm from Hong
Kong.
Cheung Sha Wan Road
The wholesale markets of Cheung Sha Wan Road are popular with Hong Kong’s fashion designers, but you don’t
have to be a serious stylist to enjoy what’s on offer. Over 250 fashion and textile shops displaying reams of fabrics

2. Mongkok Flower Market
Stepping into Mongkok Flower market, it is hard to ignore the beautiful aromas and vivid colours that surround you.
Choose from or simply admire the exotic array of flowers, pot plants and bonsai. Orchid arrangements are a firm
favourite here and, during certain holiday periods such as Chinese New Year, you can watch some of these stunning
displays being created.
Yuen Po Street Bird Garden
For something a bit different, pay a visit to the Yuen Po Street Bird Garden, which has been designed in the style of a
traditional Chinese garden. Though it’s unlikely that you’ll be taking a feathered memento home in your suitcase,
tourists are free to wander through the stalls of exotic birds, intricately crafted bamboo cages and all manner of other
bird-care related objects. The tranquil feel of this park is a pleasant contrast to the busy surrounding streets and
makes a nice spot for a change of pace.
Tung Choi Street North
One of the more exotic places to visit, Tung Choi Street is better known as the Goldfish Market. Hong Kong people
believe that fish bring wealth and good luck, and this is one of the best places to view the pet trade in action. Lined
with shops containing all manner of beautiful fish, lizards, turtles and other interesting creatures, not to mention the
aquariums to go with them, the Goldfish Market is a great place for photographs of your visit to Kowloon.

sure to take comfortable walking shoes – it’s easy to get swept away by the fast pace of life in Hong Kong!
