  • Steve, Thanks for your thoughts. I agree, The Center for Universal Design does excellent work, I’ve given presentations with them in the past and the information they present is second to none.

The term UD may be used slightly differently here than in the UK. It is common in the US to attach the term to projects that attempt to incorporate the best practices and principles of UD into homes. By no means is the use of term UD in this or other projects intended to signify it is the paramount example of the concept. http://design.ncsu.edu/cud/projserv_ps/pshexamples.htm

The Sunderland house was designed and built for the non-profit Universal Design Housing Network, a group dedicated to the incorporation of UD in to homes. We understood that it could not be a solution to all individuals. The house was used primarily as a teaching lab and was visited by national and international UD experts as well as the local community, architects, developers etc. I strongly believe the most important information we received was when someone pointed out what we did wrong or how something could be improved. This information was compiled and has greatly assisted future projects on how to better incorporate UD. It has become a ’learn from our mistakes’ library. An example of this is when a child safety expert noted that the garbage disposal switch would be better placed on the inside of the cabinet rather than the outside. It was changed in future homes.

I would welcome any thoughts you may have to incorporate into our best practices. Also, if you have projects that incorporate UD well please forward.

  • Whilst this house has many excellent features to allow enhanced usability by people with a varied range of abilities, tagging it with the term 'universal design' (UD) misses the point! UD is a philosophy of design or a set of principles in design, rather than a standard. It would be rather audacious to claim that any product is perfect in all principles of UD, especially something as complex as an entire house.
