• Between 1870 and 1914, intra-european migration
was higher than trans-atlantic migration
• Three things are necessary for migration
– A means of transport that can get you there
– A country that will take you in
– You have to want and be able to move
• Many moved to countries besides the US, 5.5 Million
moved to Argentina and 4.5 Million to Canada
• In 1914, 1 in 3 born in Argentina were to foreigners,
compared to 1 in 6 in the US
