1. FRAMNG SHOTS
Framing - same as for still images
- Don’t just point – compose the shot
Wide shot (WS)
Medium shot (MS)
Close up (CU)
Over Shoulder (OS)
Insert
Cutaway (CA)
9. 4 BASIC CAMERA MOVEMENTS
Pan
Tilt
Zoom
Track / Follow
10. PAN
The framing moves left & right,
with no vertical movement
Hold first image for 3 seconds,
pan very slowly and hold last
image for 3 seconds
Avoid ‘fire hosing’ effect by using
sparingly
11. TILT
The framing moves up & down,
with no horizontal movement
Tilt up (high angle shot) to give
illusion of height
Tilt down (low angle shot) to
create steepness
Use a tripod!
12. ZOOM
Regarded as ‘old fashioned’ today! Film
directors tend to use ‘insert’ rather than
zoom in
Use as a cropping tool to set up the shot
before recording
If using Zoom during recording
zoom in from a long shot and hold
zoom out from a close-up and hold
Don’t overuse – leads to trombone effect
13. TRACK / FOLLOW
Holding the camera (or with camera
mounted) - you track or follow the
action whilst walking.
Use a ‘dolly’ or improvise
Aim for continuity
