What are the phonetic sounds introduced in this module?
They are /s/;/a /;/sh/ ; /i/
How did you pronounce them?
Remember:
Vowels are letters that are pronounced by forcing air over your
vocal cords through your mouth.
In pronouncing the long / / sound as /ey/ in day, it is the
same as the name of the letter and so with /i/.
But when /s/ words are said, the lips are slightly open while
the teeth are closed. The sides of the tongue the inner edges of
the upper teeth and a narrow stream of air escapes through the
tip of the tongue and between the upper and lower teeth.
In the /sh/ sound, the tongue tip may point up towards the
gum ridge and it may rest behind the lower teeth. The lips are
pushed forward and are rounded but this rounding and
protrusion may vary with different speakers.
