  1. 1. Alvarez 1Elizabeth AlvarezSusan LesterAdvanced Composition26 September 26, 2011 Why Has the Demand Increased for Immigration Lawyers? Currently in the United States, there are approximately more than 12,000 lawyerspracticing in immigration law, which about 11,800 lawyers are part of the organization AmericanImmigration Lawyers Association according to their websites. In the recent years, immigrationhas been increasing more quickly than what had been predicated. Immigration is a hot issue thathas made front page headlines in the newspaper and also has been a constant discussion in bothCongress and society. The field of immigration law has always been non-beaten path, butbecause of the rise of demand for more professional immigration lawyers, more people arestarting to go down the path to become an immigration lawyer. Over the years, as the United States has become more appealing to foreign people, manypeople desire to come into this nation which results in an increased demand for professionalimmigration lawyers. Immigration is something that is increasing very rapidly. In consequenceof this, there is more of a demand for lawyers, especially lawyers certified in immigration affairs.Because of this increased desire for moving into the United States, many more immigrants desireto migrate to the country which causes a large amount of lawyers to specialize now inimmigration. Before the increase of immigrants, there has usually been an iota amount ofimmigration lawyers in certain firms, especially in large cooperate firms. Recently, a largeramount of corporate law firms have been participating in immigration cases. This has helped the

As students enter lawschool, many have grown a mentality that going into the practice of immigration laws issomething that does not benefit them and tend to stay apart from the practice. Because of theavoidance, there has always been a limited amount of students going into the practice ofimmigration lawyers. Furthermore, the law firms that have increased the number of immigrationcases have helped the practice of immigration law earn more credit in the world of law.Immigration clinics are also becoming more common as a result of more and more law schoolsholding them. Coincidently, more students are professing more interest towards immigrationlaw. This increase has attracted more students to aspire to work towards entering law school, which has also increased the number of applicants. This number increase converts law schools tobecome more selective for accepting students.Law schools will have to widen their occupationspaces and the number of buildings for the number of students. Consequently, these problematicfactors have caused a new type of collision in both careers and society. Immigration today is production an immense impact on society, and also college studentsas well as current professional attorneys. Because of the high amount of immigrants coming intothe country from different cultural backgrounds, there are many results demonstrating changechoices made in career fields. Many people are now looking into the profession of immigrationlaw, and also related jobs as notaries and consultants (Henin-Clark 60). The direct impact of thisrise in immigration population has proven to be a huge factor as more people search for apromising career in immigration law path. Students might not take the career choice to becomean immigration lawyer, but the students might decide to pursue another in that field path. Othercareers might include becoming notaries, paralegals, and specialized paralegals in immigration. As more immigration issues commence to arise in the public eye, more attorneys are being
  3. 3. Alvarez 3attracted to this practice on law. They believe that this interest will result in an increasingnumber of general-practice firms participating more in this specific practice (ImmigrationLawyers/ Attorneys in High Demand). Before immigration became a popular topic, many lawstudents would become cooperate lawyers who specialized in business laws. Now thatimmigration is a broad topic now, more law students look towards immigration laws as a morepromising area currently in the United States. People’s interests are slowing shifting from otherspecialized areas of law to immigration laws. This shift may result in many people specializinginto immigration law. The Polsonelli law firm commenced its own department of immigrationrecently. This decision was made after concluding that many lawyers were demanded to helpwith subjects pertaining to immigration law (Immigration Lawyers/ Attorneys in High Demand). The opening of a new department by the law firm Polsonelli demonstrates the high demand formore immigration services available to the public and also foreigners. With the new department, more people are going to have the opportunity of having a service within their own area. Giventhese points, immigration its self has demanded more lawyers to specialize in immigration lawswhich also has to be resolved to reach equilibrium between the demand in society and thenumber of attorneys available. Due to the fact that the demand for immigration attorneys has risen, firms are creatingnew and also improved types of exams to offer the best quality if immigration attorneys thatfirms may have to offer. A Florida committee has vowed to increase the number of certificationof immigration lawyers, but also retaining the high standards of the examination (Henin-Clark60). This Florida committee is trying to prompt more prepared immigration lawyers toforeigners. This is needed since many people are being robbed form their money. Thecommittee’s desire to contain more professional lawyers in this field is a result of more demand
  4. 4. Alvarez 4for prepared lawyers for the public. The annual BLSE conference strongly suggested posting acouple exam questions so that future testers can view the reality of the high difficulty level of thequestions (Henin-Clark 60). This study tool for immigration lawyers is a huge advantage sincethere is a grand competition in each metropolitan area. Even though these questions are availablein a quick click on a computer, many do not this opportunity seriously and result in a failing bartest result. After law school, joining the AILA, is recommended for finding any job in one’scurrent location. The majority of immigration lawyers are registered member of the AmericanImmigration. Because this organization is well known, many people look into this associationand conclude that their members are well prepared immigration lawyers. An immigration lawyerthat is not a registered member in the AILA, is considered a non-well prepared lawyer. This isnot always true since many lawyers that are not members are prepared, but cannot afford to paythe registration fee. As a result of all the open opportunities given to immigration lawyers, betterquality lawyers are being available to the people of society. The efforts made by many committees to promote better immigration lawyers, havecaused a dramatic increase over the recent years and also is predicated to continue increasing. Some struggles, according to the US Bureau Labor Statistics, that will be faced for entrance toany type of law school are competition. Because of the existence of competition, the studentmust have a high GPA and great scores on the LSAT render as a worthy competitor. Thecompetition today for even getting into any law school makes it very difficult to studentsdesiring to enter. This poses a unique kind of problem for those students that have created adesire for becoming into an immigration lawyer. This result elevates the number of peopleapplying for entrances into the law schools and also the rising number of the people that aregraduating from the field of immigration laws. It is recommended to graduates, who desire
  5. 5. Alvarez 5working as an immigration lawyer, to relocate to places where demand is very high; for example,Henderson, Nevada, Belknap, New Hampshire, New York, New York, and Denver, Colorado. This recommendation is given out to graduates since there is more demanding need in thosecertain areas that create a more attractive place for employers to seek professional immigrationlawyers. As a result of this demand, cities will begin over crowd themselves as not onlyimmigration lawyers, but also other professionals, move into the city as they get employed incertain areas. The “Bureau of Labor Statistics,” has predicted that there will be a job growth ofabout 13% for immigration lawyers in the course of 10 years. This estimate provides a longexpansion of a staggering increase in the number of job openings for future immigration lawyers. For a future graduating student of this era of time, there will be job openings to available her asshe graduates from law school. This may be a consequence in either more foreigners wanting toenter the country, or people already in the country wanting to complete their citizenship. Inconclusion, for future immigration lawyers, there will be a bright opportunity for them to acquirea job opening available and will hopefully gain more experience in the field they have so longprepared for.
