PT Gerbang Multindo Nusantara (GMN) is a social business that provides renewable energy solutions like PV-diesel hybrid systems to electrify rural areas in Indonesia. GMN is focusing on bringing electricity access to the poor and isolated islands of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) province through affordable solar home systems and addressing challenges of financing and community engagement. The presentation outlines GMN's projects, technologies like pico solar home systems, and approaches to develop localized products and identify income generation activities to support renewable energy access in NTT.

Organization type :
Privately Owned, Renewable Energy System Integrator
GMN’s objectives in the workshop:
• Sharing the initiave
• Absorb more knowlede from case studies
• Gathering inputs, suggestions
• Getting supports
6. SHS : 50 ~ 300 Wp
Solar Home System (SHS)
Pico : 5 ~ 10 Wp
7. Priority: Lighting rural villages of NTT
One of the poorest province in Indonesia
It has islands /rurals where in the next 10-20 years from now will not
even be shined by electricity. (E.g. Alor and Rote Island)
• Electricity ratio -40%
• Population: 5.1 million by the end of 2014
• Demand: lighting, and cell-phone charging
• Income generating activities: Animal husbandry,
mainly cattle farm; Dry-land agriculture cultivation;
Home industry and/or post-harvest processing:
eucalyptus oil, processed seaweed;
Fishery; traditional weaving (tenun ikat);
village cooperatives.
8. Lighting rurals of NTT
• Over 500 islands
• Hot, dry winds
from Australia
• One of the
poorest
provinces in
Indonesia
Appr. 2 million people
without electricity

10. Challenges & thinkable way outs
Financing
• Ref. Slide No. 4: non-fixed daily income; inability for up front payment
• Repayment mechanisms: weekly /monthly installments through microfinancing,
revolving fund; token system
• Relatively considered high price products
Options
• Soft loan from Banks (preferably local) or investors ; what collaterals?
• Micro-financing from banks /investors /other financial institutions to end-users
• Self funding: hardly possible; complicated; requires complex involvement in
repayment process through microfinancing
• Lower the prics: localized the assembly process for imported components, design
local innovations
Note:
• Bank or investors can be local: Bank NTT, village head, cooperative agency (koperasi
/KUD), dll
11. Challenges & thinkable way outs
Community engagement and capacity building for:
Sustainable clean energy options and technology,
sustainable environment attitudes, entrepreneurship
Kopernik (Ibu Inspirasi), experts from IBEKA, Sri
Rejeki’s “youth involved campaign”, and other
components from Smart Villages team
12. What’s being done
• Initial stage with local stakeholders; identifying
local potentials of income generating activities
• Develop local assembled products
13. Solar Home System
• 10-15 Wp panels
• Modular size
• Low wattage
• User friendly system
• Reliable performances
• Extension possibilities
• Affordable price
