Much of the leadership literature suggests the leader be “selfless.” Most leaders read “selfless” and think “bleeding heart” and they just know that that excessively sympathetic approach with staff would never work.

leader be “selfless.” Most leaders
read“selfless” and think “bleeding heart” and
they just know that that excessively sympathetic
approach with staff would never work.
3. However, the context for selflessness is
misrepresented. Selfless leadership actually
means mission-focused leadership, where
the leader had little or no self-concern,
especially with regard to fame, position or
self-reward. Their only concern is
about getting the job done.
4. “The general who advances without
coveting fame
and retreats without fearing disgrace,
whose only thought is to protect his country and
do good service for his sovereign, is the jewel of
the kingdom.”
5. To be a real selfless leader, you need to have
your head in the game; you need to be
focused. You can’t be distracted by “what was”
and “what if.” Selfless leadership is all about
focusing on action.
6. So don’t listen to that negativity, fear and self-doubt,
it simply destroys your mission focus and
makes you a “self-focused” leader.
