  3. 3. Simulation Defined - A simulation is an experience that is self- contained, referring mainly to itself. - Because a self-contained world may be repeated over and over, the ability to make copies of an experience is also key to simulations.
  4. 4. Made in 1993 Starring Bill Murray, Andie MacDowel| , and Chris Elliot PLOT: A weather man is sent to cover a story about a weather forecasting "rat" (as he calls it). This is his fourth year on the story, and he makes no effort to hide his frustration. On awaking the ‘following’ day he discovers that it's Groundhog Day again, and again, and again. First he uses this to his advantage, then comes the realisation that he is doomed to spend the rest of eternity in the same place, seeing the same people do the same thing EVERY day.

  7. 7. Whats the Connection? Phil Collins is stuck in a simulation, a day's experience in which he is repeating the same scenario over and over again. The film represents a metaphor for a life of social disconnection and self-absorption. A simulational culture is built upon the simulational self, and until we can break out of that se| f—referential loop, we are doomed to the same old repetition every day.
  8. 8. How Does Phil Escape the Simulation? - The hard realities of the actual world begin to draw Phil out. - He learns to think of others before himself. - Phil makes it to "tomorrow" by creating and maintaining a real human connection with a women, Rita.
  9. 9. Connection to Media his film in itself is a simulation presented in media form. A little world is created into which viewers enter, and whatever happens during the movie has very little effect once the film is done. If you were to watch the movie again, you will see an xact copy of the experience, which is simulational.
  10. 10. onnection to Culture Each culture has their own ways they experience simulations, and similar simulations will overlap between cultures.
  11. 11. Specific Culture Simulations CATHOLICS: Attending mass services every Sunday morning to worship God. Services are organized in the same manner each week with varying readings from the Bible. What happens during mass does not effect the outside world, therefore it is a simulation. ,4 lllllh QUESTION: - Can you think of an example of a culture-specific simulation?   13. 13. ,nnection to Soc . People today are preoccupied with self and selfish interests, obsessed with entertainment and its technological underpinnings, unable to make real human connection. That problem is particularly highlighted in terms of dysfunctional relationships between men and women. Groundhog Day is this predicament carried to its logical conclusion, a simulational paradise with no consequences in which total lfish piggishness is possible. "
