4. Oral and dental
health is something
we need to take
care of our whole
life.
If you take great
care of your teeth,
gums, dentures
and implants, they
will not only look
great but they will
take care of you.
9. TEETH AND GUM CARE
EFFECTIVE BRUSHING
Twice a day for at least 2 minutes
Quantity of toothpaste to apply: size of a pea
Brushing technique with gum massaging
After brushing don’t forget to brush your tongue
Criteria of a good tooth brush
Soft or very soft- bristled toothbrush
Aadequate enough to reach back teeth
For optimal results use an electric or battery charged toothbrush
Should be changed every 3 months
10. TEETH AND GUM CARE
Dental Floss or proxa-brush (for those who can not use dental
floss)
Once per day before bed
Before Brushing
Make sure to properly contour
your floss around every tooth
Advantage : clean the 1/3 of the teeth
that toothbrush can not reach
Alcohol Free Mouth Rinse
(with Fluoride if possible)
11. It is False to believe
that dentures last
forever.
Wearing the same
dentures for several
years without having
them checked by
your dentist, could
be harmful to your
health.
Removable Prosthesis
(Dentures)
14. White lesions associated with Dentures
- Wearing inadequate
dentures will cause
traumatic and/or
infectious lesions.
The most frequent lesion
is denture stomatitis.
→ Inflammation of the tissue
(gums) under the dentures.
→ Can be caused by
inadequate oral hygiene.
→ Associated with
microscopic yeast/fungus.
15. Treatment of denture
stomatitis
Good and adequate oral (gum) hygiene
Good and adequate denture hygiene
Medication (antifungal)
Replacing the dentures
16. What are the best
oral hygiene methods
associated with
Dentures?
17. Proper oral hygiene should
be given to the dentures
and the gums or teeth
supporting them.
Take them off during the
day as much as you can.
Brush you teeth and your
gums with a soft-bristled
toothbrush
Brush your teeth
adequately and do not
forget to massage your
gums.
Oral Hygiene
care under
the Dentures
18. Plaque and tartar can
accumulate as easily on
the dentures as on the
teeth.
Clean and brush your
dentures with good
toothbrush by scrubbing
gently all the surfaces.
Soak it in lukewarm water,
or any denture cleaner
solution. It will soften the
plaque and tartar making it
easier to brush.

19. Dental Implants
Your Denture is not fitting well?
Thinking about dental implants!
- Are you having difficulties chewing
with your dentures?
- Is your denture hurting you and
can’t stay properly in place?
- Are you gums shrinking and not
holding your dentures well?
You are probably a good candidate
for Implant supported dentures.
20. • Dental implants are no more
than artificial dental roots.
• They act as anchor to hold
your denture or the
replacement tooth or teeth in
place.
• The few implants acting as an
anchor to your denture will
help you gain back its stability.
• And by the same way you will
gain back your confidence in
chewing with ease and
comfort.
23. Dental Implants Care
- Like natural teeth, implants need to be kept clean using a
toothbrush and floss. Otherwise they can get infected.
- The biggest risk is inflammation of the tissue supporting the
implant. This inflammation, caused by bacteria, will mostly
likely start at the gum line of the implant.
- It can then progress until it reaches the bone. It can destroy
the bone supporting the implant and eventually may cause
loss of the implant.
- This is why it is essential to maintain a proper oral hygiene
in order to remove any bacteria and plaque surrounding the
tissue supporting the dental implant.
24. Oral Hygiene of Dental Implants
- Use of soft-bristled toothbrush
- Non abrasive toothpaste
(sensodyne pronamel)
- Alcohol Free Mouth Rinse
- Superfloss (cleans under
dental bridges, around dental
implants and the supporting bars)
25. NUTRITION
- Sugar is the main cause of dental
problems. On average we eat more
than 40 kg of sugar per year. Here is
how you can lower your sugar intake
and reduce your risk of having dental
problems.
- Try sugar free snacks.
- Put less sugar in your coffer or tea (or
use sugar substitutes ex: Splenda).
- It is preferable to have beverages or
juices with no added sugar.
- Read the ingredients : honey, liquid
sugar, glucose and fructose are different
kinds of sugar.
26. NUTRITION
- Avoid Taking Caramel or honey. It sticks
on your teeth and it is more difficult to
be removed. Higher risk of cavities.
- Always have a small toothbrush (the
one for travelling) that you can use at
anytime after eating sweets.
- If you can not brush your teeth after
meals, at least rinse your mouth with
water. Or have sugar free candies after
the meals.
- Examples of good healthy snacks:
Milk
Fruits and vegetables (Raw)
Cheese and yogurts.
27. Xerostomia
Decrease in saliva quantity
• Can create an unexplainable discomfort in the mouth
• Can affect your taste
• Higher risk of teeth and root caries.
• Can affect denture stability
Causes : Radiotherapy, chemotherapy, stress, diabetes,
depression and some of your prescribed drugs
More than 500 prescribed drugs can cause xerostomia
• Examples: Antidepressant, antihypertensive,
antipsychotic, diuretics, antiparkinson….
28. Recommendations
• Daily disinfection and
cleaning of your dentures
• Saliva Substitutes
• Saliva Stimulants
• Drink water frequently
• Fluoride use to lower risk of
teeth and root caries
