Numbers 26
Numbers 26:1, Two Numberings
• NAU Numbers 1:46 even all the numbered men were
603,550.
• NAU Numbers 26:51 These are those who were
numbered of the sons of Israel, 601,730.
• Is this a mistake in the Bible?
• No, it’s the total after they died and their children grew
up.
• NAU Numbers 26:1 Then it came about after the plague,
that the LORD spoke to Moses and to Eleazar the son of
Aaron the priest, saying,
• We now enter into the second half, a new beginning, of
Numbers
Numbers 26:2, “twenty years old”
• NAU Numbers 26:2 "Take a census of all the congregation
of the sons of Israel from twenty years old and upward,
by their fathers' households, whoever is able to go out to
war in Israel.“
• This phrase “twenty years old” is used 19 times in
Numbers, 7 times more than in any other NAS book.
• This repeated phrase seems to indicate that God did not
account the sin of refusing to enter the land to those
under “twenty years old.” It seems God punished
everyone over 20, and no one under twenty. This causes
many to wonder about an age of accountability.
Numbers 26:2, Twenty Year Olds
• NAU Numbers 26:2 …from twenty years old and
upward…whoever is able to go out to war in Israel.”
• Do you think a man age 17, 18, or 19 years would be
capable of going out to war? (WWI, WWII)
• Would you prefer to be defended by 18-19 year olds, or
50-60 year olds, in hand to hand combat?
• God in His sovereignty decreed the “20 years old” age
limit, for His purpose. A divine line in the sand was drawn,
not based on human reasoning.
• Deuteronomy 20:5-8, … 7 …Let him depart and return to
his house…
Humans Are Sons Of Adam
• An age of accountability does not mean, or even imply;
“not a sinner, without sin, or not a son of Adam.”
• NAU Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin
entered into the world, and death through sin, and so
death spread to all men, because all sinned--
• NAU Ecclesiastes 12:14 For God will bring every act to
judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good
or evil.
• NAU Romans 3:10 as it is written, "THERE IS NONE
RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE;…3:23 for all have sinned and
fall short of the glory of God,
We Have A Sin Nature
• We all are afflicted with a sin nature from conception. Our very
being, and nature is sinful. No one has to teach us to sin, it is
the core of our being.
• Ps 51:5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my
mother conceived me.
• I can’t think of a verse that says we will suffer eternal torment
because we were born with a sin nature. Instead, God’s Word
says He will punish every sin. We are all sons of the 1st. Adam
and consequentially need the 2nd. Adam. God says He will not
punish the children for the sins of the father;
• Ezek 18:20 The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son
will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share
the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will
be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be
charged against him. [Jeremiah 31:29-30, Ezekiel 18:2-4]
God Is Completely Just, Fair
• An age of accountability does not mean, or even imply;
“God would be unjust, unfair, or that there would not
be a judgment.”
• Hebrews 10:26-31,
• NAU Hebrews 9:27And inasmuch as it is appointed for
men to die once and after this comes judgment, 28 so
Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of
many, shall appear a second time for salvation without
reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.
• [2 Corinthians 5:10, Matthew 16:27, Revelation 22:12, 2 Samuel 14:14, 1
John 4:17, Acts 17:31]
Numbers 26:2, Age Of Accountability
• Yet it seems that in God’s infinite justice, and
sovereignty, He can account people’s sin to His
Beloved Son, Jesus Christ.
• God paid the penalty, so;
• Rom 9:18 Therefore God has mercy on whom
he wants to have mercy, and he hardens
whom he wants to harden.
• Ps 32:2 Blessed is the man whose sin the
LORD does not count against him
Numbers 26:2, Age Of Accountability
• These are some of the verses worth study;
• Matt 19:14 Jesus said, "Let the little children come to
me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of
heaven belongs to such as these."
• Eccl 6:3 …I say that a stillborn child is better off than
he.
• 2 Sam 12:23 But now that he is dead, why should I
fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but
he will not return to me."
• Isa 7:15-16 He will eat curds and honey when he
knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the
right. 16 But before the boy knows enough to reject the
wrong and choose the right…
Numbers 26:2, Age Of Accountability
• Paul was a Jew (under the Law) from birth, “circumcised on
the eighth day” (Phil 3:5), yet he says,
• Rom 7:9 Once I was alive apart from law; but when the
commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.
• Deut 1:39 And the little ones that you said would be taken
captive, your children who do not yet know good from bad-
-they will enter the land. I will give it to them and they will
take possession of it.
• Num 14:29 In this desert your bodies will fall--every one of
you twenty years old or more who was counted in the
census and who has grumbled against me.
• Josh 5:4 Now this is why he did so: All those who came out
of Egypt-all the men of military age-died in the desert on
the way after leaving Egypt.
Numbers 26:2, Age Of Accountability
• Neh 10:28 "The rest of the people-priests, Levites,
gatekeepers, singers, temple servants and all who
separated themselves from the neighboring
peoples for the sake of the Law of God, together
with their wives and all their sons and daughters
who are able to understand-
• Ex 30:13-15 …14 All who cross over, those twenty
years old or more, are to give an offering to the
LORD.
• Why did those under 20 not need an offering?
• God said it, that settles it.
Romans 5 Is A Must Read
• NAU Romans 5:1-21… 12 Therefore, just as through
one man sin entered into the world, and death
through sin, and so death spread to all men,
because all sinned--
• 13 for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is
not imputed when there is no law.
• 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until
Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the
likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of
Him who was to come….
Numbers 26:2, Age Of Accountability
• Deut.1: 39 tells us about these “little ones”
• NAU Deuteronomy 1:39 'Moreover, your little ones who
you said would become a prey, and your sons, who this
day have no knowledge of good or evil, shall enter there,
and I will give it to them and they shall possess it.
• These “little ones” “shall possess” (and take) the land.
• Num.14: 29 tells the age of these “little ones”;
• NAU Numbers 26:2 "Take a census of all the congregation
of the sons of Israel from twenty years old and upward, by
their fathers' households, whoever is able to go out to
war in Israel."
Numbers 26:2, Age Of Accountability
• I think that before we scoff at the idea that God would be so
gracious as to pardon these “little ones” of Deut.1: 39, who
have “no knowledge of good or evil”, who are under “twenty
years old” we should ponder how loving, kind, long suffering,
patient He is.
• He elects, calls, justifies, and glorifies;
• NAU Romans 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If
God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who did not spare His
own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also
with Him freely give us all things? 33 Who will bring a charge
against God's elect? God is the one who justifies; 34 who is the
one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather
who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also
intercedes for us.
We Are Not The Judge
• “I think, when we consider abortion, the death of a still
born child, or a person mentally retarded from birth, we are
evaluating God’s fairness more than the child’s capacity or
condition. There is no question that every human from the
beginning deserves hell (there are none righteous) Ps 58:3
Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they
are wayward and speak lies.”
• The question is; “Is God gracious and merciful?”
• Ezek 18:23 Do I take any pleasure in the death of the
wicked? declares the Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not
pleased when they turn from their ways and live?
• 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is ….not wanting anyone to perish, but
everyone to come to repentance.
Numbers 26:2, Age Of Accountability
• God is gracious and merciful
• NAU Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved
through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the
gift of God;
• God can bestow that gift according to His
righteousness, and His righteousness is not
tarnished if He counts the sins, sinfulness, and sin
nature of these “little ones” as paid in full by the
sacrifice of His Son. If He paid the fine, who are we
to say He is not being just or fair?
Numbers 26:2, Age Of Accountability
• Here are some other verses I have found in my
studies. Examine them yourself (Acts 17:11) in light
of Scripture; Rom. 5:13,7:9, 9:11, Isa.7:16, 2

2 Samuel 12:18-23, Age Of Accountability
• QUESTION FOR THE DAY
• Dear Compass,
• A pastor at a church we formerly attended preached from the pulpit regarding an "age of accountability" before which sin is not imputed to a child. His
statement was that if a child died, say before the age of 8 or 10 or 12, that child would automatically go to heaven.
• Recently I encountered a similar idea in a book by Tim LaHaye, where all the children are raptured (even babies in the womb) with the church. In Dr.
LaHaye's book, women later in Tribulation are giving birth to babies conceived after the rapture, which seemed like a contradiction to me. Are these
two ideas the same doctrine and where is either found in Scripture?
•
ANSWER:
• The "age of accountability" theory is based on these OT verses regarding David and Bathsheba's child conceived out of wedlock:
• Then it happened on the seventh day that the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said,
"Behold, while the child was still alive, we spoke to him and he did not listen to our voice. How then can we tell him that the child is dead, since he might
do himself harm!"But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; so David said to his
servants, "Is the child dead?" And they said, "He is dead."
• So David arose from the ground, washed, anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he came into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he
came to his own house, and when he requested, they set food before him and he ate.
• Then his servants said to him, "What is this thing that you have done? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept; but when the child died, you arose
and ate food."
• And he said, "While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, 'Who knows, the LORD may be gracious to me, that the child may live.'
• "But now he has died; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me."
• —2 Samuel 12:18-23The contention that David could see his child in heaven ("I shall go to him, but he will not return to me") is what your pastor
probably bases his theory on. However, God calls whomever, prior to the foundations of the world being laid:. . . just as He chose us in Him before the
foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him . . . —Ephesians 1:4So, it could be that David's child was chosen, but other
children are not chosen. Also, the "age of accountability" theory really borders on works. It means that it is up to someone to "do" something before
they can be saved—which is untrue. Also, if you really believed in the "age of accountability," then the logical conclusion is that you could kill your
children before they grow up to be sure they go to heaven, rather than take a chance that they won't trust Christ in their lifetime and go to hell. But—
their salvation CANNOT be based on something you do.
• To us, it's best to be content with the fact that heaven is better than anything you can imagine. And that would include imagining that all the babies
who die young will be there.
• but just as it is written,
"THINGS which eye has not seen and ear has not heard,
AND which HAVE not entered the heart of man,
ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM." —1 Corinthians 2:9
2 Samuel 12:18-23, Age Of Accountability
• QUESTION FOR THE DAY
• Dear Compass,
• I have always been a bit confused about the eternal status of aborted and miscarried pre-born babies. Given the fact that life begins at conception, they must already have souls, regardless of
when they died or were killed in their mothers' wombs. If they do go to heaven, will they be part of the Bride of Christ or given some alternate status in the Kingdom of God? And what about
very young children?
•
ANSWER:
• God both predestined every Believer before the foundations of the world were ever laid AND formed them in the womb prior to birth.
• just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself,
according to the kind intention of His will, —Ephesians 1:4-5
See also Psalm 139:13, Isaiah 44:2, and Jeremiah 1:5.When David talked of his dead baby, he said:
• . . . I shall go to him but he will not return to me. —2 Samuel 12:23Since David had no clue as to whether or not the child was chosen before the foundation of the world was laid, and there are
no other Scriptures to reference regarding young children dying and going to heaven, many assume that aborted babies and very young children go to heaven when they die. It is often
referred to as a child dying prior to the "Age of Accountability."
• However, there are potential flaws in that doctrinal theory.
• First, 2 Samuel 12:23, in context, shows David's conviction that the dead cannot return to life, and rather, the living go to the dead. He did assume he would see his child, as any parent would.
• Second, if there were an Age of Accountability, a person could kill his young children to be certain they would go to heaven, not leaving a personal confession of sin and trusting Jesus for
salvation as an option to reject. With eternal destiny at stake, why take a chance? This world means nothing compared to eternity. But that would then make their salvation be dependent on
human works - which is a false doctrine. As much as we would like to think that all aborted babies go to heaven, you just can't make a solid scriptural case for an Age of Accountability.
• However, God is in full control and makes no mistakes. For all we know, He has a plan He has not revealed to us through Scripture that pertains to infants, young children, disabled, etc. The
Bible does say that we cannot imagine how good heaven will be:
• but just as it is written,
"THINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT HEARD, AND which HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN, ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM." —
1 Corinthians 2:9So whatever you think heaven will be like, it's better than that!

Age Of Accountability
• Raptured Children
• Thursday, April 17th, 2014Rapture
• Q. I am searching scripture looking for something that tells me that the children under the age of accountability will also be
taken in the rapture. A friend asked me this and I told her that yes they would be removed at the rapture but could not back-
up my statement with scripture that actually spells that out.
• A. The idea that all children under the age of accountability will be taken in the rapture comes from two places. The first
is Matt. 18. Verse 3 says we have to change and become like little children in order to enter the kingdom of heaven. That
means children are the model to which all believers have to conform in order to enter the kingdom. Verse 10 says that all
children have an angel in constant contact with the Father. This leads us to conclude that all children belong to God.
• The second place is Romans 7:9. Here, Paul wrote about being alive apart from the law, but then the commandment came,
sin sprang to life and he died. Since he was still physically alive he had to be talking about spiritual death. So he was saying
that before the age of accountability, he had eternal life. But as soon as he reached the age where he became accountable
for his sins, he was scheduled for death and needed to find a way to regain eternal life.
• Put it all together and it appears that all children are born with eternal life. They belong to God and and their sins are not
counted against them. The way adults become like them so we can have eternal life is to be born again, because then we
become a child of God again (John 1:12-13) and our sins are no longer counted against us (Romans 7:18-20). This makes all
children and born again adults equally qualified for the rapture.

• Sinful From Birth?
• Tuesday, April 22nd, 2014Salvation
• Sin
• Q. I understand from your studies that there is an age of accountability yet, there are many scriptures that seem to say otherwise. For instance, Paul
recognizes that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23).
• The problem I have with age of accountability is, we are born in a sinful condition due to Adam and Eve (Gen 3:6-7; Rom 5:12) David described it this
way; “Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me” (Psalm 51:5). This implies that even in the womb we are guilty. How
do we reconcile this with Paul inferring an age of accountability?
• A. These are two different issues. It is true that children under the age of accountability are sinners because as David wrote we are conceived with a
sin nature. But until children are intellectually mature enough to understand the nature of sin and its consequences, God does not hold them
accountable for their sins.
• This is why Paul could say, “Once I was alive apart from the Law, but when the commandment came sin sprang to life and I died” (Romans 7:9).
• Like all of us, Paul was born with eternal life and began his life apart from the law. But when he became mature enough to understand about sin, he
became accountable to the commandments. At that point he was scheduled for death.
• Jesus said we can’t enter the kingdom unless we become like little children (Matt. 18:3). That means unless we return to a state where we’re not
accountable for our sins. That’s what being born again does for us. Paul described this in Romans 7:18-20.
• David understood this, too. In Psalm 32:1-2 he wrote, Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one
whose sin the Lord does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit.

age of accountability
• Children of the Holocaust
• Thursday, May 8th, 2014Eternity
• Salvation
• Q. During the Holocaust, where did Jewish children under the age of accountability go
upon death, even if they had been taught the Jewish religion by their parents? This
really concerns me greatly.
• A. Based on several references, especially Paul’s comments in Romans 7:9, I believe the
Bible tells us all children whether Jew, Gentile, or Christian are born with eternal life and
if they die before reaching the age of accountability will go to be with God. I believe the
age of accountability is when a child becomes intellectually mature enough to
understand the nature of sin and its consequences. Upon reaching that level of
maturity, all children become accountable for their sins, are scheduled for death, and
must be born again to regain eternal life.

Age Of Accountability
• Will Children Have To Come Back?
• Friday, June 6th, 2014Rapture
• Salvation
• Q. If my son has not reached the age of accountability by the Rapture and therefore can’t make the choice to come to Christ,
will he have to make it later? Since he lacks the capacity to sin or be judged I understand he would come with us in the
Rapture, but some believe that those who lack the mental capacity to come to Christ will be given that chance (or rather have
to make that decision) during the 1,000 year reign. Wouldn’t that mean he’d have to be born again in the Millennium in order
to make a choice. Doesn’t sound right to me. Does everyone have to decide at some point or do infants and small children
get a “pass go” card? I cannot find any scripture to support this doctrine of decision, can you help?
• A. There’s no Scripture anywhere to support that view. I don’t know where it came from. The clearest Biblical directive on the
issue comes from Paul inRomans 7:9:
• Once I was alive apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.
• He meant that before reaching the age of accountability, he had eternal life. As soon as he became accountable for his sins,
he was under the same death penalty as all adults, and needed to be born again to be saved.
• To me this means that all who lack the mental capacity to understand the sin/salvation issue at the time of the rapture will
inherit eternity. They will not need any further qualification since they’ll be given perfected bodies at the rapture and will no
longer have a sin nature.

Numbers 28:16, Passover Proof Lies In
Egyptian Hieroglyphs
• PASSOVER PROOF LIES IN EGYPTIAN HIEROGLYPHS [Excerpts]
Pharaoh's papyrus scrolls may not seem the most reliable sources for investigating the story of the Israelite's Exodus, but Egyptologist Galit Dayan has
found in them much compelling evidence to support the historicity of the biblical tale....Dayan, who earned her Ph.D. in Egyptology from Hebrew
University in Jerusalem and is the wife of Jacob Dayan, Consul General of Israel in Los Angeles, told the group that linguistic evidence reveals an ancient
and deeply involved Jewish presence in Egypt that eventually disappears. To illustrate, she drew remarkable parallels between the language of
Egyptian papyrus (hieroglyphs), the haggadah and the Bible, all of which contain references to the Exodus story. In piecing together these manuscripts,
Dayan framed an Exodus narrative based on facts of Egyptian history and language to prove her theory that a mass Exodus did occur and that it
happened during the reign of Ramses II.
• In each of the Egyptian manuscripts Dayan discussed, the same familiar characters are mentioned: Moses ("an Egyptian name"), Pharaoh, the Red
Sea/Sea of Reeds ("Yam Suf" in Hebrew), Hebrews, Israelites and the presence of slaves in Egypt.
•
• In one manuscript, known as the Ipuwer papyrus, there is an eerie description of chaos in Egypt: "Plague is throughout the land," Dayan's translation
reads, "blood is everywhere - the river is blood ... and the hail smote every herd of the field ... the land is without light and there is a thick darkness
throughout the land ... the Lord smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt - from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne to the firstborn of the
captive who was in the prison. ..."
•
• So far, evidence of the Exodus exists only as pieces of a puzzle. These fragments of history, Dayan admits, appear within different manuscripts written
at different times. "People today are still looking for the one piece, the one story - the Egyptian haggadah - that will include all the elements of the
story together," she said.
•
• There are Jews who accept the historicity of the Israelite Exodus from Egypt as an indisputable fact of the Jewish story and for whom its legitimacy
cannot be questioned. But within scholarly and scientific circles, whether the Exodus actually occurred is still an issue of serious inquiry and debate.
Dayan represents a voice in the middle, sensitive to the Jewish story and also aware of the facts.
•
• Of course, there are those who disagree. Among them is Sinai's Rabbi David Wolpe, who led a Q-and-A discussion following Dayan's lecture. Wolpe
famously disputed the historicity of the Exodus in a 2001 sermon.
• Did Dayan's presentation change Wolpe's mind - even a little?
• "Not at all," Wolpe said during the discussion. "But not because it doesn't convince me that there's evidence that makes the story plausible, because I
think there is. ... The reason that modern scholars dispute the historicity of the Exodus doesn't have anything to do with the first two parts of the story
[slavery in Egypt, the journey through the desert]; it has to do with the third part [when they arrive in the land]. ..."

28:26-31 Deuteronomy 16:9-12 Acts 2:1, 20:16 1 Corinthians

• 1 Corinthians 16:8 Exodus 23:16 Leviticus 23:15-22 Numbers 28:26-31 Deuteronomy 16:9-12 Acts 2:1, 20:16 1 Corinthians 16:8
• QUESTION Dear Compass: Why do the Jews celebrate Pentecost?
• ANSWER There is no specific Old Testament scripture that attaches any historical significance to Pentecost. According to Jewish TRADITION, Moses received the law on that day of the year.
• Pentecost (fiftieth) is the second of three major annual festivals the Jews were required to celebrate according to the Old Testament.
• Also you shall observe the Feast of the Harvest of the first fruits of your labors from what you sow in the field; also the Feast of the Ingathering at the end of the year when you gather in the
fruit of your labors from the field. — Exodus 23:16
• You shall also count for yourselves from the day after the sabbath, from the day when you brought in the sheaf of the wave offering; there shall be seven complete sabbaths. "You shall
count fifty days to the day after the seventh sabbath; then you shall present a new grain offering to the LORD. You shall bring in from your dwelling places two loaves of bread for a wave
offering, made of two-tenths of an ephah; they shall be of a fine flour, baked with leaven as first fruits to the LORD. Along with the bread you shall present seven one year old male lambs
without defect, and a bull of the herd and two rams; they are to be a burnt offering to the LORD, with their grain offering and their drink offerings, an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to
the LORD. You shall also offer one male goat for a sin offering and two male lambs one year old for a sacrifice of peace offerings. The priest shall then wave them with the bread of the first
fruits for a wave offering with two lambs before the LORD; they are to be holy to the LORD for the priest. On this same day you shall make a proclamation as well; you are to have a holy
convocation You shall do no laborious work. It is to be a perpetual statute in all your dwelling places throughout your generations. When you reap the harvest of your land, moreover, you
shall not reap to the very corners of your field nor gather the gleaning of your harvest; you are to leave them for the needy and the alien. I am the LORD your God." — Leviticus 23:15-22
• Also on the day of the first fruits, when you present a new grain offering to the LORD in your Feast of Weeks, you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no laborious work. You shall
offer a burnt offering for a soothing aroma to the LORD: two young bulls, one ram, seven male lambs one year old; and their grain offering, fine flour mixed with oil: three-tenths of an
ephah for each bull, two-tenths for the one ram, a tenth for each of the seven lambs; also one male goat to make atonement for you. Besides the continual burnt offering and its grain
offering, you shall present them with their drink offerings. They shall be without defect. — Numbers 28:26-31
• You shall count seven weeks for yourself; you shall begin to count seven weeks from the time you begin to put the sickle to the standing grain. Then you shall celebrate the Feast of Weeks to
the LORD your God with a tribute of a freewill offering of your hand, which you shall give just as the LORD your God blesses you; and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God, you and
your son and your daughter and your male and female servants and the Levite who is in your town, and the stranger and the orphan and the widow who are in your midst, in the place where
the LORD your God chooses to establish His name. You shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and you shall be careful to observe these statutes. — Deuteronomy 16:9-12
• The other two major festivals were Passover and Tabernacles. Pentecost was celebrated 50 days after Passover, or seven complete weeks; therefore, it is sometimes referred to as the Feast
of Weeks. It is also referred to as the Feast of the Harvest, probably because it comes at the conclusion of the Jewish harvest of the later grains.
• Naturally, Christians view Pentecost differently as it marks the beginning of the Church Age with the arrival of the Holy Spirit. Consequently, the Church Age will end with the departure of
the Holy Spirit, referred to as the Rapture.

Numbers 26-28, Age of Accountability, daughters of Zelophehad, Spirit “in” him, authority, My offerings

  • 1. Numbers 26-28 Numbers Chapters 26-28, Second numbering, twenty years old, age of accountability, God is just, daughters of Zelophehad, die to sin, Abarim, Spirit “in” him, authority, My offerings at exact times and places Jerusalem Daily Photo Noam Chen captures this image of the Temple Mount, standing in solitude.
  • 3. Numbers 26:1, Two Numberings • NAU Numbers 1:46 even all the numbered men were 603,550. • NAU Numbers 26:51 These are those who were numbered of the sons of Israel, 601,730. • Is this a mistake in the Bible? • No, it’s the total after they died and their children grew up. • NAU Numbers 26:1 Then it came about after the plague, that the LORD spoke to Moses and to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, saying, • We now enter into the second half, a new beginning, of Numbers
  • 4. Numbers 26:2, “twenty years old” • NAU Numbers 26:2 "Take a census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers' households, whoever is able to go out to war in Israel.“ • This phrase “twenty years old” is used 19 times in Numbers, 7 times more than in any other NAS book. • This repeated phrase seems to indicate that God did not account the sin of refusing to enter the land to those under “twenty years old.” It seems God punished everyone over 20, and no one under twenty. This causes many to wonder about an age of accountability.
  • 5. Numbers 26:2, Twenty Year Olds • NAU Numbers 26:2 …from twenty years old and upward…whoever is able to go out to war in Israel.” • Do you think a man age 17, 18, or 19 years would be capable of going out to war? (WWI, WWII) • Would you prefer to be defended by 18-19 year olds, or 50-60 year olds, in hand to hand combat? • God in His sovereignty decreed the “20 years old” age limit, for His purpose. A divine line in the sand was drawn, not based on human reasoning. • Deuteronomy 20:5-8, … 7 …Let him depart and return to his house…
  • 6. Humans Are Sons Of Adam • An age of accountability does not mean, or even imply; “not a sinner, without sin, or not a son of Adam.” • NAU Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned-- • NAU Ecclesiastes 12:14 For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil. • NAU Romans 3:10 as it is written, "THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE;…3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
  • 7. We Have A Sin Nature • We all are afflicted with a sin nature from conception. Our very being, and nature is sinful. No one has to teach us to sin, it is the core of our being. • Ps 51:5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. • I can’t think of a verse that says we will suffer eternal torment because we were born with a sin nature. Instead, God’s Word says He will punish every sin. We are all sons of the 1st. Adam and consequentially need the 2nd. Adam. God says He will not punish the children for the sins of the father; • Ezek 18:20 The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him. [Jeremiah 31:29-30, Ezekiel 18:2-4]
  • 8. God Is Completely Just, Fair • An age of accountability does not mean, or even imply; “God would be unjust, unfair, or that there would not be a judgment.” • Hebrews 10:26-31, • NAU Hebrews 9:27And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment, 28 so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, shall appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him. • [2 Corinthians 5:10, Matthew 16:27, Revelation 22:12, 2 Samuel 14:14, 1 John 4:17, Acts 17:31]
  • 9. Numbers 26:2, Age Of Accountability • Yet it seems that in God’s infinite justice, and sovereignty, He can account people’s sin to His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ. • God paid the penalty, so; • Rom 9:18 Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden. • Ps 32:2 Blessed is the man whose sin the LORD does not count against him
  • 10. Numbers 26:2, Age Of Accountability • These are some of the verses worth study; • Matt 19:14 Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." • Eccl 6:3 …I say that a stillborn child is better off than he. • 2 Sam 12:23 But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me." • Isa 7:15-16 He will eat curds and honey when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right. 16 But before the boy knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right…
  • 11. Numbers 26:2, Age Of Accountability • Paul was a Jew (under the Law) from birth, “circumcised on the eighth day” (Phil 3:5), yet he says, • Rom 7:9 Once I was alive apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. • Deut 1:39 And the little ones that you said would be taken captive, your children who do not yet know good from bad- -they will enter the land. I will give it to them and they will take possession of it. • Num 14:29 In this desert your bodies will fall--every one of you twenty years old or more who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me. • Josh 5:4 Now this is why he did so: All those who came out of Egypt-all the men of military age-died in the desert on the way after leaving Egypt.
  • 12. Numbers 26:2, Age Of Accountability • Neh 10:28 "The rest of the people-priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, temple servants and all who separated themselves from the neighboring peoples for the sake of the Law of God, together with their wives and all their sons and daughters who are able to understand- • Ex 30:13-15 …14 All who cross over, those twenty years old or more, are to give an offering to the LORD. • Why did those under 20 not need an offering? • God said it, that settles it.
  • 13. Romans 5 Is A Must Read • NAU Romans 5:1-21… 12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned-- • 13 for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. • 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come….
  • 14. Numbers 26:2, Age Of Accountability • Deut.1: 39 tells us about these “little ones” • NAU Deuteronomy 1:39 'Moreover, your little ones who you said would become a prey, and your sons, who this day have no knowledge of good or evil, shall enter there, and I will give it to them and they shall possess it. • These “little ones” “shall possess” (and take) the land. • Num.14: 29 tells the age of these “little ones”; • NAU Numbers 26:2 "Take a census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers' households, whoever is able to go out to war in Israel."
  • 15. Numbers 26:2, Age Of Accountability • I think that before we scoff at the idea that God would be so gracious as to pardon these “little ones” of Deut.1: 39, who have “no knowledge of good or evil”, who are under “twenty years old” we should ponder how loving, kind, long suffering, patient He is. • He elects, calls, justifies, and glorifies; • NAU Romans 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? 33 Who will bring a charge against God's elect? God is the one who justifies; 34 who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.
  • 16. We Are Not The Judge • “I think, when we consider abortion, the death of a still born child, or a person mentally retarded from birth, we are evaluating God’s fairness more than the child’s capacity or condition. There is no question that every human from the beginning deserves hell (there are none righteous) Ps 58:3 Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward and speak lies.” • The question is; “Is God gracious and merciful?” • Ezek 18:23 Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live? • 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is ….not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
  • 17. Numbers 26:2, Age Of Accountability • God is gracious and merciful • NAU Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; • God can bestow that gift according to His righteousness, and His righteousness is not tarnished if He counts the sins, sinfulness, and sin nature of these “little ones” as paid in full by the sacrifice of His Son. If He paid the fine, who are we to say He is not being just or fair?
  • 18. Numbers 26:2, Age Of Accountability • Here are some other verses I have found in my studies. Examine them yourself (Acts 17:11) in light of Scripture; Rom. 5:13,7:9, 9:11, Isa.7:16, 2 Sam.12:23, Eccl.6:3, Ex.30:14, Neh.10:28, Josh.5:4, Gen. 18:25, Jonah 4:11, Mt.18:1-6, 19:14. • There are some articles by other teachers that I’ve included after the “THE END” slide. You can download this PowerPoint and read them by copying the text and pasting into a Word document.
  • 19. Numbers 26:3, So, Back To Numbers • NAU Numbers 26:3 So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying, • Moab By The Jordan At Jericho
  • 20. Jordan River north of Sea of Galilee
  • 21. Jordan River near Peace Island
  • 23. Let’s Read Numbers 27:1-11 • Numbers 27:7 "The daughters of Zelophehad…
  • 24. Numbers 27:3, Die To Sin • Numbers 27:3 "Our father died in the wilderness, yet he was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah; but he died in his own sin, and he had no sons. • Romans 6:10 …He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.
  • 25. Jerusalem Daily Photo, Joe Aminoff's photo of children in the religious Jerusalem neighborhood of Mea She'arim… • NAU Joshua 17:3 However, Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, only daughters; and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah.
  • 26. Let’s Read Numbers 27:12-23 • Joshua called and anointed the next leader of Israel
  • 27. Numbers 27:12, Mountain Of Abarim NAU Numbers 27:12 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go up to this mountain of Abarim, and see the land which I have given to the sons of Israel.
  • 28. Jerusalem Daily Photo Today's gorgeous photo of the Land is by Natasha Pnini. Jerusalem Inspiration, “Though Moses was not destined to enter the beloved Land of Israel, he was given a unique opportunity described in today's verse. Not only was he able to see the entire Land physically from afar, Moses also was given a deeper vision of its inner, spiritual essence.”
  • 29. Numbers 27:17, No Shepherd Numbers 27:17 who will go out and come in before them, and who will lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the LORD will not be like sheep which have no shepherd." Zechariah 10:2 …Therefore the people wander like sheep, They are afflicted, because there is no shepherd.
  • 30. Numbers 27:18, the Spirit is “in” him • NAU Numbers 27:18 So the LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him; • Not that many passages in the OT speaking of the Spirit “in” someone. • Many times “on” or “upon” or even “with” (Numbers 11:17) • None in the OT were “sealed” or “baptized” with the Holy Spirit like us in the “body of Christ.” • We can’t pray; NAU Psalm 51:11 Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
  • 31. Numbers 27:20-21, Authority • NAU Numbers 27:20 "You shall put some of your authority on him, in order that all the congregation of the sons of Israel may obey him. NAU Numbers 27:21 "Moreover, he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before the LORD…” Only “some” and by priest and Urim
  • 33. Numbers 28:1, My food My offerings • NAU Numbers 28:1 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, • 2 "Command the sons of Israel and say to them, 'You shall be careful to present My offering, My food for My offerings by fire, of a soothing aroma to Me, at their appointed time.‘ • God claims these offerings as “His” • He says what, when, how, and by whom • He alone sets the exact times and places
  • 34. Numbers 28:1, My food My offerings • NAU Numbers 28:1 Then the LORD spoke… 2 …'You shall be careful to present My offering, My food for My offerings by fire, …at their appointed time.‘ • He commands us; NAU Hebrews 10:25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. • NAU 1 Corinthians 16:2 On the first day of every week each one of you is to put aside and save, as he may prosper, so that no collections be made when I come.
  • 35. He Sets The Exact Times And Places • NAU Numbers 28:4 'You shall offer the one lamb in the morning and the other lamb you shall offer at twilight; • NAU Numbers 28:9 'Then on the sabbath… • NAU Numbers 28:14 …the burnt offering of each month… • NAU Numbers 28:16 'Then on the fourteenth day of the first month shall be the LORD'S Passover. • Daily, Weekly, monthly, and yearly offerings. • NAU Philippians 2:17 But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with you all.
  • 36. He Sets The Exact Times And Places • NAU Romans 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. • 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

  • 38. 2 Samuel 12:18-23, Age Of Accountability • QUESTION FOR THE DAY • Dear Compass, • A pastor at a church we formerly attended preached from the pulpit regarding an "age of accountability" before which sin is not imputed to a child. His statement was that if a child died, say before the age of 8 or 10 or 12, that child would automatically go to heaven. • Recently I encountered a similar idea in a book by Tim LaHaye, where all the children are raptured (even babies in the womb) with the church. In Dr. LaHaye's book, women later in Tribulation are giving birth to babies conceived after the rapture, which seemed like a contradiction to me. Are these two ideas the same doctrine and where is either found in Scripture? • ANSWER: • The "age of accountability" theory is based on these OT verses regarding David and Bathsheba's child conceived out of wedlock: • Then it happened on the seventh day that the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, "Behold, while the child was still alive, we spoke to him and he did not listen to our voice. How then can we tell him that the child is dead, since he might do himself harm!"But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; so David said to his servants, "Is the child dead?" And they said, "He is dead." • So David arose from the ground, washed, anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he came into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he came to his own house, and when he requested, they set food before him and he ate. • Then his servants said to him, "What is this thing that you have done? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept; but when the child died, you arose and ate food." • And he said, "While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, 'Who knows, the LORD may be gracious to me, that the child may live.' • "But now he has died; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me." • —2 Samuel 12:18-23The contention that David could see his child in heaven ("I shall go to him, but he will not return to me") is what your pastor probably bases his theory on. However, God calls whomever, prior to the foundations of the world being laid:. . . just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him . . . —Ephesians 1:4So, it could be that David's child was chosen, but other children are not chosen. Also, the "age of accountability" theory really borders on works. It means that it is up to someone to "do" something before they can be saved—which is untrue. Also, if you really believed in the "age of accountability," then the logical conclusion is that you could kill your children before they grow up to be sure they go to heaven, rather than take a chance that they won't trust Christ in their lifetime and go to hell. But— their salvation CANNOT be based on something you do. • To us, it's best to be content with the fact that heaven is better than anything you can imagine. And that would include imagining that all the babies who die young will be there. • but just as it is written, "THINGS which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, AND which HAVE not entered the heart of man, ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM." —1 Corinthians 2:9
  • 39. 2 Samuel 12:18-23, Age Of Accountability • QUESTION FOR THE DAY • Dear Compass, • I have always been a bit confused about the eternal status of aborted and miscarried pre-born babies. Given the fact that life begins at conception, they must already have souls, regardless of when they died or were killed in their mothers' wombs. If they do go to heaven, will they be part of the Bride of Christ or given some alternate status in the Kingdom of God? And what about very young children? • ANSWER: • God both predestined every Believer before the foundations of the world were ever laid AND formed them in the womb prior to birth. • just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, —Ephesians 1:4-5 See also Psalm 139:13, Isaiah 44:2, and Jeremiah 1:5.When David talked of his dead baby, he said: • . . . I shall go to him but he will not return to me. —2 Samuel 12:23Since David had no clue as to whether or not the child was chosen before the foundation of the world was laid, and there are no other Scriptures to reference regarding young children dying and going to heaven, many assume that aborted babies and very young children go to heaven when they die. It is often referred to as a child dying prior to the "Age of Accountability." • However, there are potential flaws in that doctrinal theory. • First, 2 Samuel 12:23, in context, shows David's conviction that the dead cannot return to life, and rather, the living go to the dead. He did assume he would see his child, as any parent would. • Second, if there were an Age of Accountability, a person could kill his young children to be certain they would go to heaven, not leaving a personal confession of sin and trusting Jesus for salvation as an option to reject. With eternal destiny at stake, why take a chance? This world means nothing compared to eternity. But that would then make their salvation be dependent on human works - which is a false doctrine. The Bible does say that we cannot imagine how good heaven will be: • but just as it is written, "THINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT HEARD, AND which HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN, ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM." — 1 Corinthians 2:9So whatever you think heaven will be like, it's better than that! • About Compass... • 40. Age Of Accountability • Raptured Children • Thursday, April 17th, 2014Rapture • Q. I am searching scripture looking for something that tells me that the children under the age of accountability will also be taken in the rapture. A friend asked me this and I told her that yes they would be removed at the rapture but could not back- up my statement with scripture that actually spells that out. • A. The idea that all children under the age of accountability will be taken in the rapture comes from two places. The first is Matt. 18. Verse 3 says we have to change and become like little children in order to enter the kingdom of heaven. That means children are the model to which all believers have to conform in order to enter the kingdom. Verse 10 says that all children have an angel in constant contact with the Father. This leads us to conclude that all children belong to God. • The second place is Romans 7:9. Here, Paul wrote about being alive apart from the law, but then the commandment came, sin sprang to life and he died. Since he was still physically alive he had to be talking about spiritual death. So he was saying that before the age of accountability, he had eternal life. But as soon as he reached the age where he became accountable for his sins, he was scheduled for death and needed to find a way to regain eternal life. • Put it all together and it appears that all children are born with eternal life. They belong to God and and their sins are not counted against them. The way adults become like them so we can have eternal life is to be born again, because then we become a child of God again (John 1:12-13) and our sins are no longer counted against us (Romans 7:18-20). This makes all children and born again adults equally qualified for the rapture. • . http://gracethrufaith.com/ask-a-bible-teacher/raptured- children/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Gracethrufaith+%28GraceThruFaith%29
  • 41. • Sinful From Birth? • Tuesday, April 22nd, 2014Salvation • Sin • Q. I understand from your studies that there is an age of accountability yet, there are many scriptures that seem to say otherwise. For instance, Paul recognizes that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23). • The problem I have with age of accountability is, we are born in a sinful condition due to Adam and Eve (Gen 3:6-7; Rom 5:12) David described it this way; “Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me” (Psalm 51:5). This implies that even in the womb we are guilty. How do we reconcile this with Paul inferring an age of accountability? • A. These are two different issues. It is true that children under the age of accountability are sinners because as David wrote we are conceived with a sin nature. But until children are intellectually mature enough to understand the nature of sin and its consequences, God does not hold them accountable for their sins. • This is why Paul could say, “Once I was alive apart from the Law, but when the commandment came sin sprang to life and I died” (Romans 7:9). • Like all of us, Paul was born with eternal life and began his life apart from the law. But when he became mature enough to understand about sin, he became accountable to the commandments. At that point he was scheduled for death. • Jesus said we can’t enter the kingdom unless we become like little children (Matt. 18:3). That means unless we return to a state where we’re not accountable for our sins. That’s what being born again does for us. Paul described this in Romans 7:18-20. • David understood this, too. In Psalm 32:1-2 he wrote, Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit. • • http://gracethrufaith.com/ask-a-bible-teacher/sinful- birth/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Gracethrufaith+%28GraceThruFaith%29
  • 42. age of accountability • Children of the Holocaust • Thursday, May 8th, 2014Eternity • Salvation • Q. During the Holocaust, where did Jewish children under the age of accountability go upon death, even if they had been taught the Jewish religion by their parents? This really concerns me greatly. • A. Based on several references, especially Paul’s comments in Romans 7:9, I believe the Bible tells us all children whether Jew, Gentile, or Christian are born with eternal life and if they die before reaching the age of accountability will go to be with God. I believe the age of accountability is when a child becomes intellectually mature enough to understand the nature of sin and its consequences. Upon reaching that level of maturity, all children become accountable for their sins, are scheduled for death, and must be born again to regain eternal life. • http://gracethrufaith.com/ask-a-bible-teacher/children- holocaust/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+G racethrufaith+%28GraceThruFaith%29
  • 43. Age Of Accountability • Will Children Have To Come Back? • Friday, June 6th, 2014Rapture • Salvation • Q. If my son has not reached the age of accountability by the Rapture and therefore can’t make the choice to come to Christ, will he have to make it later? Since he lacks the capacity to sin or be judged I understand he would come with us in the Rapture, but some believe that those who lack the mental capacity to come to Christ will be given that chance (or rather have to make that decision) during the 1,000 year reign. Wouldn’t that mean he’d have to be born again in the Millennium in order to make a choice. Doesn’t sound right to me. Does everyone have to decide at some point or do infants and small children get a “pass go” card? I cannot find any scripture to support this doctrine of decision, can you help? • A. There’s no Scripture anywhere to support that view. I don’t know where it came from. The clearest Biblical directive on the issue comes from Paul inRomans 7:9: • Once I was alive apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. • He meant that before reaching the age of accountability, he had eternal life. As soon as he became accountable for his sins, he was under the same death penalty as all adults, and needed to be born again to be saved. • To me this means that all who lack the mental capacity to understand the sin/salvation issue at the time of the rapture will inherit eternity. They will not need any further qualification since they’ll be given perfected bodies at the rapture and will no longer have a sin nature. • http://gracethrufaith.com/ask-a-bible-teacher/will-children-have-to-come- back/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Gracethrufaith+%28GraceThruFaith%29
  • 44. Numbers 28:16, Passover Proof Lies In Egyptian Hieroglyphs • PASSOVER PROOF LIES IN EGYPTIAN HIEROGLYPHS [Excerpts] Pharaoh's papyrus scrolls may not seem the most reliable sources for investigating the story of the Israelite's Exodus, but Egyptologist Galit Dayan has found in them much compelling evidence to support the historicity of the biblical tale....Dayan, who earned her Ph.D. in Egyptology from Hebrew University in Jerusalem and is the wife of Jacob Dayan, Consul General of Israel in Los Angeles, told the group that linguistic evidence reveals an ancient and deeply involved Jewish presence in Egypt that eventually disappears. To illustrate, she drew remarkable parallels between the language of Egyptian papyrus (hieroglyphs), the haggadah and the Bible, all of which contain references to the Exodus story. In piecing together these manuscripts, Dayan framed an Exodus narrative based on facts of Egyptian history and language to prove her theory that a mass Exodus did occur and that it happened during the reign of Ramses II. • In each of the Egyptian manuscripts Dayan discussed, the same familiar characters are mentioned: Moses ("an Egyptian name"), Pharaoh, the Red Sea/Sea of Reeds ("Yam Suf" in Hebrew), Hebrews, Israelites and the presence of slaves in Egypt. • • In one manuscript, known as the Ipuwer papyrus, there is an eerie description of chaos in Egypt: "Plague is throughout the land," Dayan's translation reads, "blood is everywhere - the river is blood ... and the hail smote every herd of the field ... the land is without light and there is a thick darkness throughout the land ... the Lord smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt - from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the prison. ..." • • So far, evidence of the Exodus exists only as pieces of a puzzle. These fragments of history, Dayan admits, appear within different manuscripts written at different times. "People today are still looking for the one piece, the one story - the Egyptian haggadah - that will include all the elements of the story together," she said. • • There are Jews who accept the historicity of the Israelite Exodus from Egypt as an indisputable fact of the Jewish story and for whom its legitimacy cannot be questioned. But within scholarly and scientific circles, whether the Exodus actually occurred is still an issue of serious inquiry and debate. Dayan represents a voice in the middle, sensitive to the Jewish story and also aware of the facts. • • Of course, there are those who disagree. Among them is Sinai's Rabbi David Wolpe, who led a Q-and-A discussion following Dayan's lecture. Wolpe famously disputed the historicity of the Exodus in a 2001 sermon. • Did Dayan's presentation change Wolpe's mind - even a little? • "Not at all," Wolpe said during the discussion. "But not because it doesn't convince me that there's evidence that makes the story plausible, because I think there is. ... The reason that modern scholars dispute the historicity of the Exodus doesn't have anything to do with the first two parts of the story [slavery in Egypt, the journey through the desert]; it has to do with the third part [when they arrive in the land]. ..." • • http://www.jewishjournal.com/passover/article/passover_proof_lies_in_egyptian_hieroglyphs_20100324 • The Berean Call

According to Jewish TRADITION, Moses received the law on that day of the year. • Pentecost (fiftieth) is the second of three major annual festivals the Jews were required to celebrate according to the Old Testament. • Also you shall observe the Feast of the Harvest of the first fruits of your labors from what you sow in the field; also the Feast of the Ingathering at the end of the year when you gather in the fruit of your labors from the field. — Exodus 23:16 • You shall also count for yourselves from the day after the sabbath, from the day when you brought in the sheaf of the wave offering; there shall be seven complete sabbaths. "You shall count fifty days to the day after the seventh sabbath; then you shall present a new grain offering to the LORD. You shall bring in from your dwelling places two loaves of bread for a wave offering, made of two-tenths of an ephah; they shall be of a fine flour, baked with leaven as first fruits to the LORD. Along with the bread you shall present seven one year old male lambs without defect, and a bull of the herd and two rams; they are to be a burnt offering to the LORD, with their grain offering and their drink offerings, an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the LORD. You shall also offer one male goat for a sin offering and two male lambs one year old for a sacrifice of peace offerings. The priest shall then wave them with the bread of the first fruits for a wave offering with two lambs before the LORD; they are to be holy to the LORD for the priest. On this same day you shall make a proclamation as well; you are to have a holy convocation You shall do no laborious work. It is to be a perpetual statute in all your dwelling places throughout your generations. When you reap the harvest of your land, moreover, you shall not reap to the very corners of your field nor gather the gleaning of your harvest; you are to leave them for the needy and the alien. I am the LORD your God." — Leviticus 23:15-22 • Also on the day of the first fruits, when you present a new grain offering to the LORD in your Feast of Weeks, you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no laborious work. You shall offer a burnt offering for a soothing aroma to the LORD: two young bulls, one ram, seven male lambs one year old; and their grain offering, fine flour mixed with oil: three-tenths of an ephah for each bull, two-tenths for the one ram, a tenth for each of the seven lambs; also one male goat to make atonement for you. Besides the continual burnt offering and its grain offering, you shall present them with their drink offerings. They shall be without defect. — Numbers 28:26-31 • You shall count seven weeks for yourself; you shall begin to count seven weeks from the time you begin to put the sickle to the standing grain. Then you shall celebrate the Feast of Weeks to the LORD your God with a tribute of a freewill offering of your hand, which you shall give just as the LORD your God blesses you; and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God, you and your son and your daughter and your male and female servants and the Levite who is in your town, and the stranger and the orphan and the widow who are in your midst, in the place where the LORD your God chooses to establish His name. You shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and you shall be careful to observe these statutes. — Deuteronomy 16:9-12 • The other two major festivals were Passover and Tabernacles. Pentecost was celebrated 50 days after Passover, or seven complete weeks; therefore, it is sometimes referred to as the Feast of Weeks. It is also referred to as the Feast of the Harvest, probably because it comes at the conclusion of the Jewish harvest of the later grains. • Naturally, Christians view Pentecost differently as it marks the beginning of the Church Age with the arrival of the Holy Spirit. Consequently, the Church Age will end with the departure of the Holy Spirit, referred to as the Rapture. • About Compass...
