Raised with christ
1.
2. 1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you
formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the
prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the
sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the
lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind,
and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. 4 But God,
being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,
5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive
together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us
up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ
Jesus

for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die

4. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they
were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves
loin coverings. 8 They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in
the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid
themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of
the garden.

5. 22 “But the father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly bring out the best robe
and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet;
23 and bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; 24 for
this son of mine was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and
has been found.’ And they began to celebrate.
31“And he said to him, ‘Son, you have always been with me, and all
that is mine is yours. 32‘But we had to celebrate and rejoice, for this
brother of yours was dead and has begun to live, and was lost and has
been found.’”

6. 21 Another of the disciples said to Him, “Lord, permit me first to go and
bury my father.” 22 But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and allow the
dead to bury their own dead.”

9. 7 And if He rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct
of unprincipled men 8 (for by what he saw and heard that righteous
man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day
after day by their lawless deeds).

10. 23 When Jesus came into the official’s house, and saw the flute-
players and the crowd in noisy disorder, 24 He said, “Leave; for the girl
has not died, but is asleep.” And they began laughing at Him. 25 But
when the crowd had been sent out, He entered and took her by the
hand, and the girl got up. 26 This news spread throughout all that land.

11. 11 Soon afterwards He went to a city called Nain; and His disciples
were going along with Him, accompanied by a large crowd. 12 Now as
He approached the gate of the city, a dead man was being carried out,
the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a sizeable crowd
from the city was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, He felt
compassion for her, and said to her, “Do not weep.” 14 And He came
up and touched the coffin; and the bearers came to a halt. And He
said, “Young man, I say to you, arise!” 15 The dead man sat up and
began to speak. And Jesus gave him back to his mother. 16 Fear
gripped them all, and they began glorifying God, saying, “A great
prophet has arisen among us!” and, “God has visited His people!”

12. 38 So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, came to the tomb. Now it
was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39 Jesus said, “Remove the
stone.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, said to Him, “Lord, by this time
there will be a stench, for he has been dead four days.” 40 Jesus said to her,
“Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” 41 So
they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes, and said, “Father, I
thank You that You have heard Me. 42 “I knew that You always hear Me; but
because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that
You sent Me.” 43 When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud
voice, “Lazarus, come forth.” 44 The man who had died came forth, bound
hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth.
Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” 45 Therefore many of the
Jews who came to Mary, and saw what He had done, believed in Him.

raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him
from the dead. 13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the
uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him,
having forgiven us all our transgressions,

15. 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of
water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 “That
which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is
spirit. 7 “Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
8 “The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do
not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone
who is born of the Spirit.”

18. 20 If you have died with Christ to the elementary principles of the
world, why, as if you were living in the world, do you submit yourself to
decrees, such as, 21 “Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!”
22(which all refer to things destined to perish with use)—in accordance
with the commandments and teachings of men? 23 These are matters
which have, to be sure, the appearance of wisdom in self-made
religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but are
of no value against fleshly indulgence.

20. 22 Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a
sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart,

imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God.

of the heart.

23. 1 Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the

24. 21 Therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of
which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is
death. 22 But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God,
you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome,
eternal life.

30. 14 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there
by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of
men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; 15 but speaking the truth in
love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even
Christ.

31. 34 But when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the
Sadducees, they gathered themselves together. 35 One of them, a
lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, 36 “Teacher, which is the
great commandment in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, “ ‘YOU
SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND
WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ 38 “This is the
great and foremost commandment. 39 “The second is like it, ‘YOU
SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ 40 “On these two
commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”

Editor's Notes
Last week the lesson focused on the sacrificial death of or Lord and savior, answering the question, “Why a Sacrifice?”examining the sacrificial system of the Old Law in connection with the crucifixion of Christ. Today I would like to focus on the resurrection of Christ with this morning's lesson on Jesus' Resurrection and Our Own Spiritual Resurrection and tonight discussion EYEWITNESS TESTIMONY OF THE RESURECTION.
Paul describes our spiritual resurrection
Adam and Eve died the very day they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil because their disobedient sin separated them from God.
A similar frantic response that one might have upon receiving news of imminent physical death from a physician or the sentence of death from a judge. We likely are not impacted by the significance of this separation from God because we live daily with the reality of a world dead in its sins. [READ 2 PETER 2:12-22] As ugly as a dead decaying corpse walking among the living. SPIRITUAL ZOMBIES
Christ was saying, “Allow those who are spiritually dead, bury those who are physically dead, but you who are alive, follow Me!”
Sixth Sense - The main character, Cole Sear sees the spirits of those who have recently died. Many don't realize that they are dead.
The movie ends with a twist when we come to find that Dr. Malcolm Crowe, played by Bruce Willis, thinks he is helping young Cole when actually it is Cole who is trying to help Dr. Crowe come to the realization that he is one of the dead that Cole sees. Just like in the movie, The Sixth Sence, we are seeing the spiritually dead all around us.
Righteous Lot was tormented living among the spiritually dead. Not all who are spiritually dead appear to be equally so anymore than all who are physically dead appear equally so as illustrated by the tree occasions of Jesus raising people from a physical death (Spurgeon).
Jairus' daughter had just died.
The widow's son and died and they were on their way to bury the dead.
Lazarus was dead and in the tomb for 4 days. When Christ asked them to remove the stone to his tomb, Martha protested that there will be a stench because he had been dead and decaying for 4 days. Just as there is no natural way to bring the physically dead back to life there is also no natural way to bring the spiritual dead back to life. Both require an act of God.
Paul tells us HOW THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED
The same power that physically raised Christ from the dead, can RISE US UP TO A SPIRITUAL RESURRECTION FROM THE DEAD! One of the most significant passages on our spiritual resurection is found in Christ's conversation with Nicodemus
Nicodemus had asked Christ, “How can a man be born when he is old?”vs 4 The only way for it to be possible was for Christ, who knew no sin, to become death for us.
The only One who lived a perfect life in obedience to the Father, was also the only One who could take on our sins for us. He BECAME THE UGLINESS OF A SINFUL CREATURE FOR US.
Someone might ask, “How do we know that we have been born again?” It is not some “feeling” that we have to continually CONVINCE ourselves that we are saved. How can we ever truly know the source of that feeling whether it is from our own mind or from God? On the other hand, it is not by works, emersing ourselves in “self made religion!”
I would like to suggest that there are several INDICATORS, in accordance with scripture, that we have been BORN AGAIN. One of the indicators is pain.
How can mourning be a blessing? Because having eyes we see and having ears we hear and understand that sin is sinful and therefor choose life! Still, like righteous Lot, our soul is tormented by the sin that surrounds us! Secondly we become immersed in His word.
If we are truly growing in the Word of God, then we appreciate and come to believe in the POWER OF THE WORD!
A third characteristic of a spiritual resurrection is A DIFFERENT ATTITUDE OR STANDARD BY WHICH WE LIVE
Our old way of life seems nothing more than a SHAMEFUL ABOMINATION.
Also a person who has been raised with Christ, no longer seeks to be independent from God but rather “ENSLAVED TO RIGHTOUSNESS.” They no longer LIVE FOR THEMSELVES BUT LIVE FOR CHRIST.
One of the most important and the most apparent characteristics of a new life in Christ is LOVE!
John is not issuing a command by saying we OUGHT TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER. He is stating a fact, If we have risen with Christ and understand (thought not comprehend) His love for us than LOVING ONE ANOTHER SHOULD BE PART OF OUR NATURE, just like a fish OUGHT TO SWIM or a bird OUGHT TO FLY! Another characteristic of being raised with Christ is growth.
Have we checked our growth chart? Has there been A TRANSFORMATION since our conversion to Christ? Are we bearing fruit for the Lord? It is not how many talents we have increased but that there is a change whither a few talents more or many. FINALLY, the very basic fundamental indication of a new creature in Christ is OBEDIANCE! Such a one does not view adherence to God's word as some legalistic set of commands but rather a humble adherence to the will of the ONE WHOM WE LOVE WITH ALL OUR HEART SOUL AND MIND!!!
This new birth is just the beginning. We must continue to mature and grow.
Even though, physically we are aging each day and growing closer to death, yet our inner man is comig to life, being renewed day by day.
THE ONLY WAY WE CAN ARISE FROM THE DEAD IS TO BE RAISED UP WITH CHRIST!!!
