Staff appraisals forms
1. Staff appraisals forms
An appraisal form is a vital part of modern business. The appraisal provides an
opportunity for all levels of any company to communicate openly on their cumulative
successes and failings, the form is essential to this process.
The major benefit of an appraisal form is that it gives the whole process a structure. Each
individual staff member uses the same form, ensuring that everybody has the chance to
air their views and get feedback on the issues individual to them. Because of this
uniformity, in structure at least, it is easier for the employer to create goals and analyse
the workforce as a whole.
The success of an appraisal form is usually found in its structure. You don't want it to be
too rigid, equally you also don't want it to be overly vague, as both can cause problems
when it comes to the evaluation itself. Essentially you want enough manoeuvrability to be
able to take on board new suggestions and comments, without leaving yourself high and
dry when it comes to discussing their progress.
An appraisal form also provides a lasting account of what was discussed, giving a
documented statement of the progress each individual in the company has made. This can
be stored in records indefinitely and referenced when required. Obviously this might
concern some, but in the most part an appraisal is a positive experience; allowing both
sides to communicate their ideas and aspirations, helping to shape the future of their
career and position within the firm.
If you set goals, there is a clear record of this, which can then be referenced back during
your next meeting. Again, this might seem a little 'big brother' like; but in any business it
is essential to have targets to ensure that the staff have a clear direction to follow, whilst
the management can communicate what they expect of them. In truth it is just a standard,
even essential practice in modern business and allows everybody to know where they
stand at all points.
An appraisal form is just as beneficial for staff as it is for the employer. Throughout the
year, half year or quarter issues may arise from time to time that you don't immediately
inform the upper echelons of the company. The appraisal then provides you with the
perfect opportunity to get any feelings, ideas and issues down on to the page and discuss
them openly with your superiors.
Of course this isn't a free-for-all and certainly shouldn't be treated as such, but it is an
opportunity for some constructive comments to be passed on between all parties. The
appraisal has become such an embedded practice in all industries that it is almost
impossible to imagine a working life without them. Whilst some might treat them with a
little cynicism, it is important that all parties are free to discuss their thoughts, set targets
2. and generally work together to improve the conditions and effectiveness of the working
environment.
As previously stated though, the quality of the appraisal form itself will play a major part
in how smoothly and effectively the process runs. Where possible you should try to get a
standard document from a professional supplier of technical business documents. This
will save you from potentially missing any vital parts or crossing any legal boundaries.
Even if you do have a professional form created on your behalf, there is always room for
personalisation; so don't panic about not being able to include questions that are specific
to your company or a particular role.
So whatever your industry, whatever your business, staff appraisals should be high on
your priority, as should the appraisal form. They can be as regular as you require and as
in-depth as is necessary, leaving you in complete control of how the whole process will
run.
