transport and facilities, juries, jobs, and
neighborhoods

to their jurisdiction.

14th: All persons born or naturalized in the
United States and subject to the jurisdiction
thereof, are citizens of the United States and
of the State wherein they reside. No State shall
make or enforce any law which shall abridge
the privileges or immunities of citizens of the
United States; nor shall any State deprive any
person of life, liberty, or property, without due
process of law; nor deny to any person within
its jurisdiction the equal protection of the
laws.
African Americans = second class citizens
Christian ministers, doctors, and Social Darwinists
taught:
• whites were superior to blacks in intelligence,
morality, and civilized behavior
• interracial sex would produce an inferior
mongrel race which would destroy America
• if necessary, violence must be used to keep
blacks at the bottom of the racial hierarchy
Jim Crow etiquette:
• A black male could not offer to shake hands with a white male
because it implied social equality.
• Blacks and whites were not supposed to eat together. If they did,
whites were to be served first.
• Under no circumstance was a black male to light the cigarette of
a white female, a gesture implying intimacy.
• Whites were addressed as Mr., Mrs., Miss., Sir, or Ma'am; blacks
were called by their first names.
