• A black male could not offer to shake hands with a white male
because it implied social equality.
• Blacks and whites were not supposed to eat together. If they did,
whites were to be served first.
• Under no circumstance was a black male to light the cigarette of
a white female, a gesture implying intimacy.
• Whites were addressed as Mr., Mrs., Miss., Sir, or Ma'am; blacks
were called by their first names.
