2. About My Students
✤ All students are classified as Special Education
✤ All students have some behavioral or emotional problem
✤ Attendance for some students is sporadic at best
✤ Computer skills are generally low among this population
✤ About 60 students in the school
✤ No more than 8 students per class
3. The Problem
✤ These students are not capable of transferring information from a
blackboard or SmartBoard to their own computer screen
✤ Attention spans are low
✤ When students fall behind or are unsure, they start to act out with
negative behaviors, putting them even further behind
✤ This becomes a cyclical process leading to more serious behavior
problems and very little student learning is accomplished
✤ Some students are absent often and miss key parts of a unit
4. The Idea
✤ Pre-record all of the lessons for a given unit
✤ Lessons should be short (< 5 minutes each)
✤ Make each lesson always available
✤ Allow for student creativity and use projects that are meaningful
✤ Allow for flexible completion of assignments
5. The Tools
✤ Videos will be available both on DVD and through Vimeo.com
✤ Videos are recorded on a Mac using Screenflow
✤ Since the software being demonstrated is a web app, the demo
platform is not an issue
✤ Each student will get a set of headphones to use to listen to the videos
6. The Theory
✤ Based on the Constructivist Learning Theory
✤ Allow students to be an active part of the learning
✤ Give them access to tools to try new skills
✤ Give them freedom to use the tools in new situations
✤ Make their learning meaningful through personalized projects
7. The Implementation
✤ All students start on the same date, though it is expected that they
proceed at their own pace
✤ The first part of the unit is based on the video tutorials
✤ Students watch / follow along on their own computers, pausing and
rewinding when necessary
✤ The final part of the unit is project-based
✤ Students follow simple guidelines to demonstrate their knowledge of
the available tools
8. The Outcome
✤ Students were on-task more often than in previous, teacher-led
lessons
✤ There were less behavioral referrals during this unit than any other
unit
✤ More work was completed during this unit than any other unit
✤ More individual attention was available for student inquiries
