Webquest – climates around the world
1. WEBQUEST – CLIMATES AROUND THE WORLD
INTRODUCTION
Let's learn the climate regions!
Pretend that you and your family are planning a vacation... Pick a place in the world
you want to go! Does your family like to visit the beach? Or do you like to vacation in
the mountains?
Then use this Holiday Weather Map to find the climate of the place you want to visit!
Is it rainy? Is it hot? Is it cold? Use the key to see what the colors on the map mean.
This should give you an idea that different areas of the world have different
climates. We want to learn the climate regions of the United States!
TASK
Visit this map to see the names of the climate regions of the United States.
Learn the different vocabulary words related to climate; arid and semi-arid
may be the only ones you need to know.
You will be able to identify the climate of different regions of the United
States using appropriate terms.
You will make pictures using a tool called Kerpoof based on each climate
region.
2. PROCESS
LEARN SOMETHING:
First: Use this dictionary to search the definitions of: WEATHER and CLIMATE.
Write these down on a piece of paper. Write down two differences between weather
and climate.
Step 1: Click on this link to visit the United States climate map I have given you.
Step 2: List the different climate descriptions listed on the map. Separate the list into
three different categories - hot, cold, wet and what you think goes where. Don't
worry about the codes. This should take 15-20 minutes. Use what you know about
areas of our country! For example, you know Florida is not snowy so you can list
that under hot.
Step 3: Log onto flashcardmachine.com and sign into your account. Make flashcards
for all of the climate descriptions you may be unfamiliar with. Practice for 15
minutes.
Step 4: Can you think of a movie that has to do with climate? Please click here for a
quick Ice Age surpise! If you're still not satisfied, I heard it was supposed to
be cloudy with a chance of meatballs outside today! ;)
Step 5: After watching those two trailers, write down what kind of climate you think
they experienced.
Step 6: Finally, visit this weather page for late fall and early winter. What climate is
this and what regions of the United States do you think experience it? Do the
tropical regions of Florida get this?
Step 7: Take out a piece of paper and write your name, your favorite season, and
what climate West Virginia experiences!
MAKE SOMETHING:
Step 8: Do all regions of the United States experience the same climate? Are they all
snowy or hot or dry or humid? Answer this at the bottom of your paper.
Step 9: Go to Kerpoof and sign up for a new account with your name. Make sure you
write down your login information!
Step 10: After you have logged in, click on "Make a Picture."
Step 11: Choose at least 5 IMAGES that appear to be a climate you have learned. On
each picture, identify the climate, i.e. tundra, tropical, etc. using the Text Box. You
may insert or draw three images that relate to that climate, i.e. snow and a polar
bear for the tundra climate.
Step 12: Print out these 5 images and bring to class.
