  • 1. Language and Critical Thinking Chapter 6 English and Spanish are a Language?
  • 2. Language
    • Language meets the needs and expectations of the audience at an appropriate time, place, person and occasion.
      • There are four areas of language that are important and use for critical thinking.
        • Word choice
        • Ambiguity
        • Definition
        • Intensity
  • 3. Word Choice
    • Meanings of words that people have own meanings to it.
    • One word can have several meanings.
    • example: Chest or Chest Board, this can be confusing to others and others would know the meaning of each if thy use critical thinking. In other words common sense.
    • - A lot of words may sound the same in diverse ways but it can be define differently. Is the person saying the word the right way so the other can understand what are they talking about. The connection between the word and sub words is the tool to make a sentence make sense.

  • 4. The Whorf Sapir Hypothesis
    • It helps determine the way people interpreter the words.
    • It explains why two or more people from other cultures or subcultures have problems communicating with each other.
    • Because it determines language and it builds up our way of thinking and our surroundings.
    • Language is the tool that puts together ideas, programs and guide in mental activity, analysis of impressions.

  • 5. Ambiguity
    • Ambiguity are words that have different meanings in culture, person, and symbols.
      • In an argumentation the language can be easily misunderstood in different ways.
      • This happens when people’s significance is unclear.
      • In Audience select ambiguity words that are appropriate to the audience are more likely to be heard and understood or misunderstood.
      • When it falls into confusion a Euphemisms is used to correct the misunderstood language.
  • 6. Definition
    • Is an exact statement or description of the nature, scope, or meaning of something.
    • When giving a statement the information being send needs to be accurate to understood.
    • Get the people in the same page for example: make sure everyone understands the topic and are paying attention.
  • 7. Definitions are used in two different meanings
    • Denotative meaning
      • Is refer the way a word is being used or the meaning that people use.
      • The new definitions are added to reflect current expressions.
    • Connotative meaning
      • Is refer to the way the person response to it emotionally.
      • An old object can mean a lot to you but for others it can be old and dirty.
  • 8. Dictionary
    • Is a way of clarifying what a word means.
      • Dictionaries are different by:
        • Regular, legal, medical, etc.
        • Words are define how it applies in the particular field. It provides them with sentences to clear out the meaning to make better understanding.
        • The noun, verb, subject and other phrase or also apply.
        • The way you understand the dictionary can still be confusing to others because of the way individuals where introduce to the language.
  • 9. Conclusion
    • Language is not just the expression, is the essence, of understanding that is why it is important to both communicate, and think in simple English. The words and meanings giving in an argument or statement should always have critical thinking to advance your thinking and behavior. The way we transmit words with one another should not create conflicts or lack of information it should be a way to know how to “think” and use sense of our language. Be able to translate out language into other culture, it should be the goal to help you and others have a better communication and way of thinking all together.
