In 1829 ‘Branxton’ was mentioned for the first time in a
‘Church & School land grant.’ Before this in 1828, a
census of the area Branxton township was 10 people.
These 10 people formed the now Branxton township
which originated as a small service village above a
difficult creek crossing which was referred to as ‘Anvil
Creek’ because the coal was so hard it would take an
anvil to break it.
The name ‘Branxton’ comes from a town in Northern
England. It is a farming country with similar rolling hills
and agricultural flats. About half a kilometre out of the
town is a small creek, similar to Black Creek.
Originally Branxton was named Black Creek about 182
years ago.
