Biocat organized the Barcelona Emergence Forum (April 10-11th, 2014, Congress Palace, Montjuïc) supported by the TRANSBIO SUDOE, a translational cooperation project dedicated to innovation in life sciences in South-West Europe. The Barcelona Emergence Forum contributed to bringing together Academics, Companies, Investment Entities, Technology Platforms and Technology Transfer Offices from Spain, France and Portugal to set up collaborative projects on Human Health & Agro-food Innovation.

Experience • Bio and Tech contest – To nominate the best "project" of the year in Toulouse region – 4 editions from 2004 to 2007 – Organized and funded by regional council • Modalities – Call for application – First dossier for submission (quite simple) – Selection of a short list (4 to 6) to be presented to a jury – Designation of the best project of the year in Bio & Tech • 40 K€ • Communication
  7. 7. What worked • 4 editions – Good projects – Good winners – Good jury • Commitment of stake-holders – Regional council – Expert members of the Jury – Business community

What didn't work • Very different projects – Established companies vs start-ups – Service providers vs drug discovery • After two years: fewer applicants (from 12 to 6) – Narrow basis of selection • Limited positive impact – Limited communication on the winner – Limited positive impact on the community • The regional council decided to discontinue – Limited value for money
