3. Crime in 1450
During the 1400s, laws were made by people with power
and wealth. This meant that the crimes that affected
the powerful (e.g. the Church )were the ones that were
treated most seriously including the use of the death
penalty. The more serious a crime, the more gruesome
the punishment:
Crimes like theft and assault were usually punished
using the stocks, whereas crimes such as blasphemy
(taking God’s name in vain) where punished using
branding.
