2. GEORGIA PERFORMANCE
STANDARD
S3P2- Students will investigate magnets and how they affect other magnets
and common objects.
A. Investigate how to find common objects that are attracted to magents.
3. MAGENTISM FISHING!
Before class prepare a fish bowl filled marbles, dyed water or colored sand
to create the water illusion, fill the the bowl with magnetic and non-magnetic
materials. Some of these materials may include but not limited to keys, paper
clips, pipe cleaners, Styrofoam, silver coins, plastics, wood, rubber, ect.
Have the children assemble their own “fishing poles” using the materials is
the list below. Also have note cards labeled with the materials in the bowl
turn them face down when it is their turn to “fish”. They then have to pick a
card and decided after they fish the item out with their fishing pole if it is
either magnetic or non magnetic, depending on their observation. Have the
students also match the object to the magnetic or non magnetic on the
promethean or smart board by dragging it to the correct section. This way
the whole class can see the observations and can conversate and decide if
they think the predictions are correct. When all of the students have taken a
turn then the class as a whole will discuss the activity. This way we as
teachers can make sure that each of the students are getting the material
that is presented to them.
4. MATERIALS!
Fishing Poles:
Pencils
String
Tape
Magnets
Fish Bowl:
Water, sand or marbles to create water illusion.
Magnetic materials; paper clips, pipe cleaners, nuts and bolts.
Non magnetic materials; Styrofoam, plastics, wood, aluminum foil.
*** Don’t forget to make your note cards if your not using a smart board
5. CONNECTION OF THE TOPIC TO REAL
WORLD APPLICATIONS
Why did the magnets pick up the metals
The magnets picked up the metals because; magnets attract or pull toward
objects that are made with iron. Ex: paper clips, scissors, screw, pipe
cleaners. However, they do not pick up objects such as plastic, wood, rubber,
or paper. This is because these objects are not made with iron.
Recycling
A large magnetic conveyor belt is used at scrap yards to separate metals
from plastics.
Compass
Remember…… opposites attract, the bottom (south) of the needle of the
compass is attracted to the north pole of the Earth, which helps lead us in the
right direction.
6. FACTS TO REMEMBER!
Magnets have two poles; North and South.
Opposites attract; same repel.
Magnets can pull through air but can also pull through solids and liquids.
A magnet will only have magnetic pull when a magnetic object is in its
magnetic field.
