Now and then: A thought about visiting the
folk museum in Folkärna.
The combined kitchen,bedroom, and living room.
There was a large open fireplace in the corner of the
room.
As a part of the language project we went to the folk museum in Folkärna. After the visit we were
supposed to pick one of the pictures from the visit and write down a special thought of that certain
day. Something that came up in our minds during the presentation of the old house.
Folkärna is the name of a small community near our school so we could walk to the place.
Bosse, One of the other teachers joined us. He knows a lot about how we lived a long time ago here
in Sweden and said many interesting things.
And then I got my thought. We stood in the room in the picture and talked about the family and how
they lived so close upon each other all the time. Often they had to sleep two in the same bed. That
was just how things worked in those days. After a long day of hard work they could gather in the
living room eat, telling stories, work on some handcraft, maybe knit and just spend time together.
Without any electricity to warm up the house you had to find other ways,of course they had the
open fireplace but in the end that fire would burn out too. You can not sit and watch it every hour of
the day.
When I heard this I started thinking about the life of a family in a time like this. How much social
life are we having today? How do we work, Do we enjoy our life?
A typical Friday night today we gather around the TV. If even that. Every kid nowadays has a
computer and spend a lot of time by it. I myself has been one of those who can not watch television
without my computer in my lap. What if I should miss something that happens out there. We don
not need to talk to each other in the same way any more. I missed the way a family spent time
together. And we work so much more than before but still we just getting more and more lazy and
fatter and unhealthier. We have absolutely everything but still we are more unhappy then ever, and
live under a kind of constant technical stress.
Really have something to talk about. Life together all the time, knowing a lot of people. Not seeing
visiting the grandparents like something you have to do.
A normal hard day of work and then just enjoy what you have. No stress of computers, cellphones
and mail. When you were done you could feel relaxed in a different way.
I imagine that life must have been much more meaningful and happier though It was filled with a
lot of hard work and worries. But they had each other.
A think the life they lived were very rich.
