6. HISTORY OF PHOENIX, ARIZONA
Phoenix’s modern history began in 1867 when Jack Swilling of Wickenburg stopped to rest his
horse at the north slopes of the White Tank Mountains. He saw farmland that was free of rocks in a
place beyond the reach of heavy frost or snow. He saw the opportunity in the wealth of the land and
became inspired. This first town of Phoenix was one mile long, a half-mile wide and contained 96
blocks. Washington Street was the main street and, on the early maps, showed to be 100 feet wide.
The east and west streets were named after our American presidents. Washington Street was placed
in the middle and Adams, who was the second president, was given the first street to the north. Our
third president, Jefferson, had the first street south of Washington named after him. The pattern then
followed: one to the north and one to the south until recently.
By 1875, there were 16 saloons, four dance halls, two Monte banks and one faro table in Phoenix.
With the arrival of statehood, the casual, easy growth that made up a farming community slowly came
to a stop and began to grow into a young metropolis. After eight years under statehood, Phoenix
became an important city with a population of 29,053 people with 2,000 students attending Phoenix
Union High School in the year 1920. A total of 1,080 buildings went up that year along with Arizona’s
first skyscraper, the Heard Building.
Today, the city covers more than 500 square miles and has a population of more than 1.4 million,
ranking it sixth in the country. While Phoenix is the corporate and industrial center of the southwest
it has certainly not forgotten its past. It has retained its sophisticated reputation of friendliness and
concern of its citizens for one another and their government.

HISTORY OF LINCOLN LOGS
Michael Araten, President and CEO of K’NEX Brands
Located in the South Building Oak Room
Thursday 9:00a.m - 10:30a.m
Knex leader and CEO, Michael Araten will be discussing the history
of Lincoln Logs and how they have evolved. Introduced just after
the Tinker Toys, Lincoln Logs were invented in 1916 by John Lloyd
Wright. John was inspired by the Imperial Palace Hotel architecture in
Tokyo. He named his invention after Abraham Lincoln, the President who began his celebrated life
in a log cabin. These classic toys are made with real wood, polished with a top-grade stain to help
preserve and extend the life of the wood. The interlocking logs eventually were sold to K’NEX toy
company where they continue the making and selling of this classic toy. Michael will share his story
with buying the Lincoln Log brand and what he sees for the future of an all-time favorite toy.

THE WOODS BROTHERS
The Woods Brothers are musician siblings from
Boulder, Colorado. After 15 years of creating music
projects separately, the two brothers decided to form
a band. The Woods Brothers adapt the blues, folk
and other roots music sounds they loved as kids into
their own evocative sound, twining their voices in the
sort of high lonesome harmony blend for which sibling
singers are often renowned. Oliver Wood (guitar,
vocals) and Chris Wood (bass, vocals, harmonica)
refine their rich, spacious sound along with supple
assistance from drummer Tyler Greenwell and a
fleet of gifted guest players. The brothers simmer,
swing and soar, shifting moods and time signatures
with aplomb. We are happy to welcome The Woods
Brothers as they perform songs from the duo’s third
full-length album, as well as some bluegrass classics.

14. Keynote Speaker
NOEL BARRETT
Noel Barrett was born in Westerly, RI but grew up in Alexandria, VA. A class of 1964
graduate of Columbia University, Barrett earned his Bachelor’s Degree in American History.
After graduation, Barrett turned to his greatest passion, antique toys and American history
artifacts. Barrett was able to turn what others would call a hobby into a successful retail
business. In 1986, after 20 years in the industry, he broadened his retail business by
adding the auction division to the company, turning it into what is known today as Noel
Barrett Antiques & Auctions.
America knows Barrett best for his role on the hit PBS
show, Antiques Roadshow where he offers appraisals
for antique toys with a mix of his quirky but exciting
personality.
Over the past ten years, Barrett has focused more
strongly on the auction portion of his
business. He holds two or three of his
own auctions every year on top of the
several auctions he serves as Lead
Auctioneer for.
In addition to his commitments with
PBS and his own business, Barrett
still finds time to write articles for
numerous collector publications, in
particular Antique Toy World. He
also currently serves as president for
Antique Toy Collectors of America.
Make sure to join us at our Gala
Dinner, Wednesday at 7:30p.m to
catch Noel Barrett in action at the
Grand Phoenix Ball Room.
